In the old days we always used to beg anyone with PX privileges to buy beer and cigarettes 'On Base' because it was dirt cheap and no tax, I know since then the Exchanges have been privatized and are no longer run by the government so the pricing hasnt been as generous.  Last time I was at HPDHQ register window the 3 kids behind me all were there with firearms the bought at the PX. Anyone know if prices on base  for ammo etc are better than our local brick and mortars? Cuz I might know a guy ..

Only one I know on island is at the Kaneohe MCBS. The prices were on par with retail stores - nothing stood out as I saw it. Not sure if they will ask you for your military ID for firearms or ammo purchase.

I have on-line NEX and Exchange accounts, as that passed a few years back.
I will feed back any info I can get. I really don't think the exchanges are very gun friendly
these days.  Even when I was still in the active military they didn't sell guns or ammo
on base.  Private sale only and don't tell anybody!
But that was years ago in a different state.

A friend bought a few guns from the shop of MCBH for good deals, at least what he told me. He bought a nice 1911 and another semi-auto. Seems like they had good pricing on ammo as well when they had sales.

As for pricing? When I used to have access to NEX/BX/PX back in the 2004-2007 timeframe, seemed like prices we’re awesome. Even food in base seems way cheaper. Not sure when it changed and went private run like the OP mentioned, but seems like pricing same as off base. Except for the no tax thing.

Another military friend mentioned the NEX has these scratch cards that you can get something like 15-50% off a single item. That along with sales can get some things pretty cheap. He got his son a Microsoft Surface Pro that usually MSRPs for around $2k for a little over $1k.

There's a mini px at the national guard armory by the Hilo airport.  No guns there.  It's like a convenience store with extra stuff.

WA state in 2020, so I will be shopping at Joint base Lewis-McChord,
when I visit there.

With regards to the new law, make sure you have the required ID, You will need a VA Medical card that shows that your medical benefits are any one of the following.
1, service-connected (0-100% disability)
2, Purpleheart
3, POW
4, Medal of Honor recipient

If its not written on the ID you won't be able to shop, Right now in? Hawaii less than 800 people have the qualifying ID cards. The process to get the new ID takes about 3 months.

Also the only exchange you will be able to shop at is the NEX, unless you have base acess thru another means.

I'm surprised that less than 800 people in Hawaii have the qualifying Veterans Health Identification Card
(VHIC)!
I have one. 
The VA doesn't give out qualifying VHIC cards like candy.
You can't get a lawyer and make them do it like the
rest of the country does with SSI and SSDI.
You earned that card the hard way.
Good to know there aren't as many disabled Vets in the islands as
I had thought. I see them all the time at the VA clinic, so I think
there a lot of them.

Are you a military retiree? If so you can....

The MCBH PX has very good prices, if you have the ability to shop there. Their price on my new pistol was the exact same as the price my LGS in Montana had a week later.
