Iran launched 'more than a dozen' missiles at bases in Iraq housing US troops (Read 8358 times)

Intel says Soleiami was the main guy planning on a war with the US in the future, so now without him, Iran has no plan.  They're just launching to save face at this point.

I hope no US personal are killed because Trump issued his warning what would happen if any are.

I would like to see how the DNC responds if any of our troops were injured/killed in the attack.

I don't trust USA Today, but this one quote is probably accurate,
“I found it pretty sobering,” the Connecticut Democrat said."
That was a reference to a briefing  congress got concerning
the most recent military activities dealing with Iran.
As I've said before, take out their refineries and
the Nuke power plant, then stand back.

Possible FF to lure in? There are a few closer and much more populated bases.

When I first heard there was a retaliation I really felt they were going to attack us at our most vulnerable. I thought we would have massive amounts of missiles and lots of casualties. So far from what I have heard, no reported casualties. Doesn’t mean there won’t be but hopefully there won’t.

There is a large base close to the Iran border with the largest number of troops deployed in Iraq. This base would have been the target I would have expected an attack from Iran. They know where most of our troops are. The closer base would have been easier to hit more accurately. They could have created a much worse scenario than what actually occurred. But they chose two bases with a lot Iraqi troops. Making it possible that there may be Iraqi casualties. They chose two bases that are large and spread out. Making it harder to hit the small concentration of troops. They used missiles that either were not terribly accurate or they were aimed at areas where there were fewer or no troops. They have the cruise missiles that can hit with pinpoint accuracy. We saw that in the attack on Saudi Arabia. They also chose the two bases with Sunni and Kurdish troops. Sending a message?

Are they just sending a message? It almost appears to me that they launched a nothingburger attack. So they can say they retaliated. But not piss off the Orange Trump Bully who is scaring the piss outta them. If they don’t kill any Americans, will Trump retaliate?

Thats what i was thinking. He did call of the airstrike when our drone was shot down because lives for unmanned equipment isnt fair.

So to save face and it ends here hopefully.

We have to respond in some way, IMHO. If no Americans are injured then I think some more sanctions would be in order. Or something that hurts them in the wallet. He needs to continue to make the offer to come to the negotiation table to end all of this. I really think his plan of maximum pressure is working. Otherwise the attack on US troops tonight would have turned deadly. I think they are afraid of Trump/US military. Time will tell...

My gut tells me the missile sites that launched the strikes and the Iran Revolutionary Guard HQ are at the top of our hit list.

Maybe we should launch a precision strike with cruise missiles to land right outside their headquarters? But not kill anyone. I know, I know, you don’t have to say it.  :geekdanc:

If there are no American injuries I am not sure a response that has a chance of killing anyone, especially civilians, is not the right move at this time. I’m no expert by any means. Maybe a big retaliation is in order? I figure if a big retaliation is coming Trump wouldn’t have announced he is going to sleep and address the country in the morning. I think something along the lines of sanctions/arm twisting is coming instead.

Have trump call them and tell them to draw a X in the sand about 15 yards across. Then we hit it and they say oh shit.

That's what I'm figuring, too. Iran is probably just as glad a we are that no Americans were hurt.

Trump called off a retaliatory strike once, saying killing a bunch of Iranians isn't a proportional response to downing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

This missile attack had the potential to kill many people, including US military, contractors and Iraqi allies.

I don't think Iran's intention was to make craters in unpopulated desert regions as a statement of some kind.  We shouldn't view their poor aim or incompetence as a sign of benevolence.

Imagine a gangbanger pointing a gun in your direction, pulling the trigger, and hitting everything around you.  I don't think you'd buy the guy a drink and offer helpful tips on trigger control!   :shake:

This is why I think there will not be a big retaliation. If one thing I have found about Trump is consistency. I think it is better in this case to deescalate the situation. Be the bigger person and use it as a diplomacy win. This is just my opinion here. I won’t claim any sort of expertise in this situation.

This missile attack had the potential to kill many people, including US military, contractors and Iraqi allies.

But it didn’t kill anyone. Not even close. So why was this done this way? They certainly have the technology and ability to pick better and easier targets and hit them with precision. I don’t buy it that they are that incompetent and their missiles are complete junk. The reason I believe this miss was done on purpose is because of the tweet from Zarif that stated they do not wish to get into a war with us and this was just retaliation for our precision strike on their general. The fact that they stated they do not want war with us is a bit of a turn around from their usual rhetoric of death to America. Plus they hit Iraqi and Kurdish bases that only house US troops. Also, Iran had been threatening to attack these two bases recently prior to all of this. This just smells of trying to save face with their citizenry. I think Iran was sending a message to the Iraqis and Kurds as well.

I think we need to deescalate this and move on.

I don't think Iran's intention was to make craters in unpopulated desert regions as a statement of some kind.  We shouldn't view their poor aim or incompetence as a sign of benevolence.

I disagree. I really do think they meant to make craters on those bases without loss of life. I know I sound ignorant. But I really do think this was staged. I’m probably wrong here and I will admit it if I am.

I am speculating here of course. I really think the bad orange man is making them pee their pants. Since Iran no longer wishes to escalate this into war (which they have been threatening for years) I see this as a huge win for Trump. I really do I do think the best course for us is deescalation as far as military retaliation is concerned. But we should respond. Sanctions with harsh results? Taking one of their ships in the gulf? Some sort of arm twisting that hurts them?

Something else I found interesting is that 4 out of the 15 missiles that were launched, failed one way or another. That’s like a 25% failure rate.

BTW, the stock market tanked in the pre-market and is now flat right before the president is to speak. The markets see this as a nothingburger so far..

Trump won't retaliate cause he doesn't need to.  It's the best case scenario for him.

No casualties from the missile strikes so Trump will just say Iran has crappy missiles and move more anti missile batteries in for the next time.  Iran just screwed up and probably shot down their own airliner so I suspect they'll stay quiet for a while.  Democrats have nothing to go on since there's no escallation of force as Trump is showing smart restraint.  Sanctions stay on and other European countries may jump on the sanctions since Iran is violating the nuclear deal with them.

Prayers for the 176 Innocents who died due to Iran's screwup.

Inspector

Now I’m hearing that Iran actually might have tipped us off about the attack off prior to their launching the attack. If this is true, I think it backs up the premise that they were not trying to kill Americans.

They did tip us off. It was posted through a media outlet and not verbal.

Word also is the pres of iran was losing control of his army due to the general using it as his private army. So like i posted when solemiami was killed, iran will come to peace talks with him out of the way.

Well I certainly hope you are correct. I heard somewhere this morning that Iran might be considering coming to the table. Apparently the maximum pressure campaign along with what you said may be breaking them down. However, I don’t think it will happen soon.

If they're coming now, that was faster than I expected.  Maybe plans were already in the works, but 1 guy was holding it back.
