bolt action show and tell

lets see your bolt actions!   :geekdanc:

this is one of mine.  its a Ruger American Predator in .308.  18" barrel, I installed a Magpul Hunter stock, optics is a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42.  it shoots great for a budget bolt action, I can get about 1 MOA with GMM ammo, sometimes better on a good day

Barnard; three lug bolt; single shot target action
Trigger, CG 2 stage set at 1.25#
Barrel, Barlein 5r .308 bore '95 Palma match chamber finished @ 30" end is stepped @ .750" for front iron sight
Stock is a Robertson Composite RCI2-H&H, from Canada

Glass, Nightforce 12-42 NSX  2DD reticle
I can also shoot this with match iron sights and slung up prone.  The front sight is Centra Goliath 30mm with adjustable iris, rear I cannot recall off hand

Barreled by Wayne, Pacific Custom Rifles

Fires handload 155 SMK palma projectiles or 155 TMK @ ~2950 using lapua Palma SRP brass with pressure to spare. (during load development i got up to 3000 FPS with minor pressure signs, don't do this at home kids)
Groups through the same hole a 100 yards if I do my part, had a clean at 300 yards f-class once (3" 10 ring 1.5" Xring) and Easily picks the heads off of golf tees at 300 yards.

Also shoots 168 gr Berger Hybrids SURPERBLY,  and my go to for 600 yards.  (wish I could try 1K)

Does this count?

Ruger precision rimfire  (22)
Leupold 4-18x scope

Pretty close to being a tac driver for a $380 rifle.

Ruger rimfire with Primary Arms 6x32 scope
its perfect for the silhouette range.  I use the ACSS reticle for BDC and wind hold overs.

IMO nothing better than American made components by American people to produce simplicity and ingenuity through the bolt action rifle world. With the exception to glass, the austrians and japanese have that down to near perfection lol. Maybe one day ill stop building bolt rifles and put some money to an AR.

Thanks brotha. For my hands and anatomy, i actually wasnt impressed with the Manners T6A. The mcmillan a5 and foundation hand angle and thickness feel much more natural to me. But quality wise they are all on par.

All this bolt action talk got me thinking about upgrading the stock on my Ruger American 223 with a Boyd's stock
Not a whole lot of options for the American, but I hear the Boyd's is a good option

Yaa heard pretty good thing about boyds. Not sure what your budget is and idt i would reccomend dropping that much into a ruger american, but there is the MDT Lss and ESS chassis for it as well as the oryx. The oryx is like 400ish, and you don't have to worry about varied fit with a non bedded boyds. The LSS is good cuz you can use AR parts if u have one already.

those are really nice chassis systems.  that ESS is really expensive!  the Oryx looks good too.
but for my 223, I just wanted a wood stock so it can just look better than the factory plastic one, so I might just go with the Boyds
but maybe my next bolt action I might use one of those stocks.  thanks for the recommendations.   :shaka:

Lol ya, once u get a feel behind one of the higher end chassis and stocks you def get spoiled. If you do get the boyd i highly reccomend the pro varmint. Youll def want the vertical pistol grip and flatter butt for rear bag control when prone. Unless shooting off a bench, but still the vertical grip is just such a more natursl and relaxed position for the shooter. Dont forget ti post pics when all said and done. If you ever see me with any of my rifles at the range, feel free to come up and say whatsup, always willing to let people lie down behind my rifle and dry fire or even shoot live rounds.

Have been wanting to update/upgrade the stock on my REM 700 for a while.  Have long wanted to try a McM stock, but then took a break from shooting in general.  Not that I've gotten back into it more, want to include the REM 700.  Waiting for the trigger to come in that I ordered in a Black Friday sale, then will get the stock.  Also looked hard at the Magpul stock, Manners, B&C, and others.

took the stock off my American 223 just to look inside before I ordered the Boyd's stock
I figured while the stock is off, I would adjust the trigger since its really easy to do with an allen wrench.  should be around 3-3.5 lbs now.  the stock trigger is adjustable from 3-5 lbs
just need to wait for the stock to come in now.  I hate waiting.    :grrr:

I was stuck in a similar position as you as well, didn't have anyone around me who shot higher end stocks, only chassis (mpa, xlr, ai, etc). So i bit the bullet and bought stocks blindly which can get expensive and dissapointing. No matter if your hunting or bench shooting or prone or prs style, i always recommend a vertical gripped oriented stock. The hand placement for "traditional" stocks puts way too much stress in the hand imo to make a clean crisp trigger pull. Unless you are in a safari or doing quick shots hunting in brush, these angled grips make no sense to me.

As far as brands go, i think you will have decide if you wanna go budget or all out lol. Because any higher end stock with quality bottom metal will run you >1k. Imo if your going to upgrade but dont want to break the bank, at minimum i would go boyds or gray boe, grayboe being my preferred since they are related to the mcmillan family. I think redhawkrifles has salws on grayboe with DBM for like 500ish? The ergonomics will be near identical to an A5 mcm but will obv not be as rugged or "feel" the same in hand (what that's worth is up to u).

To end the long rant. I do try to head to go to Kokohead at least a few times a month. If you see a maroon old camry, feel free to look for me shooting and id be glad to let you get behind the rifle. 99% of the time ill have my manners or mcmillan or foundation stock. And im mostlt with my bro who shoots currently with an MPA and XLR. Lemme know if there are any specific questions you got regarding any of that.

Thanks!  Def no safari for me  ;D  Mostly bench shooting for me, but no humping my 700 around.  If I were to do that, I'd def get a lighter rifle.

The A-5 has been on my want list for a while.  I am still kicking myself for not jumping on a sale maybe 4-5 years ago when I could've gotten one in the 400-500 range.  Don't think I need "as rugged" and will check out those two you mentioned, but I do also appreciate quality and am generally ok with spending a little more when warranted.

Thanks for the offer.  Might take you up on that one day when I get back serious into the 700.  Have a bunch of FGMM lying around that needs some "attention".

I adjusted the triggers in all 3 my bolt action Ruger Americans:  22LR, 223, 308.  adjustable 3-5 lbs, maybe its around 3-3.5lbs now in each one
so far I only shot the 22 LR.  feels slightly more accurate although I cant really tell by shooting silhouettes.  but it does feel lighter.  goes bang before i'm expecting it, which is a good thing I guess
now I need to test the 223 and 308.
still waiting on the Boyds stock for the 223 to ship.
sometimes I order too impulsively bc I found a seller on ebay that has some Boyds stocks ready to ship.  only found this after I ordered directly from Boyds
