How many of these appointments are no-shows?  Could be the anti-gun nuts reserving spots to interfere.
Maybe its B@ll@rd, Sh##h@n and L#v$n tying up all the appointments--they're antis after all.  A huge anti-gun conspiracy to deprive us of our rights!  Black Guns Matter! O0

Yup.  A couple of friends bought their first firearms just before the COVID shutdown and their appointment to acquire is early August.  So a delay of 5 months in acquiring their first handguns.

Anyone just "show up"? Can they deny you if you walk in? It's a public service they are mandated by law to perform and if they deny you an application, does it fall under deprivation of rights under color of law? I'm asking because I don't know.

As far as I know, the statutes haven't changed and should someone bring in an out of state firearm, HPD is making them a criminal by HPD action. Also if your permit application is ~10 weeks out, do people still want to buy a gun? How many are disheartened by the wait and just quit? Seems like lots of people want to be 1st time buyers but can't because of the delay. I'm just rambling and I know it, but what can be done to fix this? Thanks Zippz for his lawsuit to change some of this.

Isn't that a Hawaiian holiday (Grandparents' Day)?

11 weeks to apply then 2 week wait!?!?!? That is completely unacceptable! By delaying a right by an unreasonable time frame they are denying your right.

When you pick up your permit and go down to pick up your pistol that same day do you have to register it that day or as long it’s within the 6 or 7 days?

I believe you have to have an appointment made to register the firearm.  If you've applied for the permit but didn't make the follow-up registration appointment 2-3 weeks later IDK what HPD can/will do for you.

When I picked up my PTA this morning the officer told me that applications are now scheduled well into September.  I've got appointments set up for mid-late August but no gun(s) purchased yet.  I have to wonder how much of the delay is due to such appointments.

The law says you have to pick up the weapon before the permit expires -- 10 days after it's ready for pickup, as you said.

However, once you get the weapon in hand, it starts the registration clock.  You are supposed to register within 5 calendar days from that point.  It doesn't have to be registered that day, but within the 5 days allowed.  That's counting weekends and holidays, too, so plan accordingly.

Two different dates involved.

There's a discrepancy between the days printed on the permit for the registration period and what's in the law.  I believe the permit says 48 hours, but don't quote me.  Pick whichever deadline suits you.  HPD normally doesn't do anything besides give you call if you don't make it back within 5 days.

So for arguments sake if I applied and picked up my handgun permit to acquire, go to my FFL, pick up my handgun and have an appointment to register it in late August, then what? :-\

Print out your appointment info and keep it where you normally keep your registrations.   :geekdanc:

What are they going to do?  Arrest you?  I'd love to see a hundred people show up at court all having to face charges of possessing an unregistered firearm -- and every one of them just waiting until their appointment date.

That  would be a real circus! Yup that’s what I figured but didn’t want to call firearms asking questions. ..... Got a SIG P320C coming in and my appointment to apply is mid July (made it awhile back) and another to register Last week of September.. ;)
