Be careful with hepa air filters, some contain fiberglass
You dont want to be inhaling fiberglass at close range
She confirmed that she uses Kirby HEPA filters, cut from sheets of material (not from bags).  No fiberglass.  There's a lot of YT videos about this.

She's probably sewn 8-900 so far.

each HEPA filter is different.  some are ok with particle filler mostly a paper material, some have fiberglass, some carbon.
if you look up close and rub the filter some, you can see the fiberglass hairs on the ones that are fiberglass.
some have a material data sheet which show the materials exactly.
I seen one on YouTube with a 3m HEPA filter, the material data sheet was provided with no fiberglass.
I ordered the pm2.5 filters bc they are made for inserting into masks.  they are pretty cheap.  the shop towels are a good option too with 93% filtering, that's pretty good and I have some rolls of shop towels at home

I also saw a study where they use N95 vs regular surgical mask which are only 70% filtering, and nurses contracted the flu at about the same rate with either mask
the result of the study was there was no significant difference in using N95 or surgical when contracting the flu.  there was slightly more contracting the flu wearing surgical mask but only a few percent, so was insignificant outcome
the virus itself is a small particle, but is attached to spit so the mask even if its not N95 will trap the spit and the virus bc its on the spit.  that is the theory behind this study.
but i'm still going to wear my N95
at work I wear the N95 with a surgical mask on top.    :shaka:

The most effective layer in an N95 is the melt-blown polypropylene layer.  While the layer is porous compared to the other layers, it's ionically charged at the time of manufacture.  The negatively-charged flu/CV particles are trapped in that layer by the ionic charge and are inactivated within 5 minutes of contact.

The melt-blown polypropylene layer is about 90% effective on its own.  Combine that with the other 3 layers in an N95 certified mask, and that's where the 95%+ rating comes from.

It would have been great to make that melt-blown material known and available to the general public for use in homemade masks.  It would have put the whole "works/doesn't work" debate to bed very early in this mess.

Personally I think this is all Horseshit.
If you had read some of my comments you know I helped my Microbiologist
degreed dad on his senior project.  Typhus  mutations.
If you are sick wear a mask, if not don't waste something someone else can
use.
It is real simple, you get infected by ingesting the virus.
be it picking your nose or eating food sneezed on.
The world is filthy with viruses and other "Germs".
Always has been,  always will be.
an example
Both my wife and I had Chicken pox as kids, I have scars from it, she doesn't.
we are nearly the same age,  in our mid 60's.  We both still
are infected with that Virus,
She suffered from " Shingles",
I have not.  We had to keep her "quarantined"
as many adults today haven't had chicken pox
and it can be deadly for adults never infected.
I didn't have to worry, so other than me doing
more chores than usual
LIfe went unchanged.
This virus may well be like chicken pox.

The shutdown hasn't affected me, but it certainty
has destroyed about 1/3 of Hawaiian state citizens
income stream.
Once things work out all the Government critters will
figure out where their money comes from.
People out of work don't pay taxes, buy things, or seek
out services.
Hope you remember that when Democrats want to be elected
in November.

Yup the stinking demoncraps will start making up for lost $$ in the way of increased property tax, increased GET tax, taxing retirements and COLA income etc etc. One way or another they will find a way to get their dick beaters into our wallets, ignore our protests and vote themselves a nice little raise while they’re at it! They have no fear because they know that two thirds of Hawaii voters either don’t want to rock the boat, too politically stupid to know how to rock the boat or too damn lazy to rock the boat! In other words, we're screwed...... >:(

I too have been scarred by the pox.
I still remember how my mom and others sent us kids over to the neighbors to GET infected as noted in my "Hard Choice " poll. https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=36564.0
I got it real bad, my sister didn't.
My mom had it bad too and just last year came down with shingles really bad, almost blinding.
Scared my semi-anti vax sis into getting the shingles shot.
We just completed ours vacs last month.

I think there is too much emphasis on the masks. I mean, you're more likely to touch something that an infected person has left virus on then touch one of your mucous membranes (nose, eye, mouth etc...) than walk thru an airborne particle sneezed out by someone within 6 ft.
I see this all the time like when at the store once a week for beer ESSENTIALS.   ;)
Actually had a lady ask me to step back as my foot was stepping on the 6' demarcation "death" line.  :o
We were both wearing masks and gloves but as she paid, she took off her glove, reached into her purse and pulled her  ID and CC out of baggie and handed to clerk.
Clerk needed authorization so ID and CC were also handed to counter manager before being returned to her which she carefully returned to their plastic stronghold, then back to her purse.
She then picked up the wrong pen to sign the CC kiosk, dropped it and grabbed the correct pen and signed.
THEN SHE PUT HER GLOVE BACK ON !  :wtf:
Was tempted to warn her about her protocol but thought  Darwinism it would be the same as altering mind set of anti-2a person.
