I find it interesting that everyone here is so pro the information gained from this HIGHLY illegal and unethical way of getting said info.  This is why the republican party is going further away from freedom.  First the patriot act, then the Hillary emails, now this.  I am not arguing on the facts obtained but how there were obtained.  Imagine if you got your laptop to be fixed and the technicians looked at all your personal data.  I find it shameful that you all are supporting this.  This is why the 4th and 14th amendment exist.

Note: this also applies to the non republicans supporting this.  The breach of civil liberty and freedom is ridiculous.  No matter what the guy did,  it was found in an unethical and illegal way.  The ends does not meet the means.
If this was a court of law this would be eliminated from evidence.  I would treat it the same.  Even if they found out the hunter biden killed people for sport. If the information gained was immoral and illegal I cant support the means to get it.  Much like torture.

Hunter Biden dropped off three computers with liquid damage at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware on April 12, 2019. The owner, John Paul Mac Isaac, examined the three and determined that one was beyond recovery, one was okay and the data on the hard drive of the third could be recovered. Hunter signed the service ticket and John Paul Mac Isaac repaired the hard drive and down loaded the data. During this process he saw some disturbing images and a number of emails that concerned Ukraine, Burisma, China and other issues.

Not even trying to hide the fact he snooped illegally on info that wasn't his during the repair....

So if a tech saw pedo type pics, shall they not report it to the FBI?  It already is being done all the  time.  The Bill of Rights is so the government cannot control you.  As an individual vs. another individual, it does not apply.

I'm not a IT tech, but wouldn't the person fixing the laptop have to make sure they fixed it, by opening files to see if they work?  Or to try and open files before fixing to see what's wrong.

Or he wants to see the actual signed contract between Hunter and the tech.  BRB, calling them right now so they can fax it over.

May be just the impression I get from snippets of the blocked millennials manic postings, but he/she sure sounds like a very upset liberal trying to protect Biden with this laptop thing.

Not like an "independent" with an open mind that wants to know about the character of candidates.

None of this matters. There is such a thing as abandoned property laws. After the prescribed time the laptop became the sole owner of the business. And the owner of that business can do whatever the fuck he wants with it. Fucking stoooopid!!  There are no privacy laws protecting the information on that laptop after it becomes the property of the business. Fucking stooooopid!!! 🤦‍♂️

That's a really hard question. What I would do would not get myself into that situation.  I would not be opening files randomly on the computer.  Perhaps ask the client before hand where I should do file tests.  And respect the persons privacy above all.

Ends don't make a means.  After reading everything he indeed legal if he truly made efforts to return the laptop which i question.  Lets say that is correct we have to question the motivation.  If he made copies knowing what they contained because he was against it, its breach of privacy.  The fact that the breach of privacy occurred first should render all further evidence moot. If cops illegally search your house and find a dead body that dead body should never be used to convict you of any crime.

Also, as an IT guru (OmniGuru), he should know that it's permitted for an IT professional to access the information on any system under their control.  it's LITERALLY what we do.

I've had access to SO MUCH classified data, always at the level my clearance allowed, but I have no "need to know".  We can't work with a blindfold on.

Who did anything illegal?  I would say Hunter #1 dropped off a PC with what looked like child porn, #2 failed to PAY the shop owner for the services he provided (that's called "theft"), and #3 abandoned the laptop which forced the owner to take possession of the ABANDONED PC.  Giving the PC to the FBI ensure the owner will never be reimbursed for the time and materials he expended on this contracted job.

If the laptop was ILLEGALLY retained, why didn't anyone call the Cops to have it returned?  Any ideas on that one?

As for "a court would not allow this as evidence," that's so stupid.  Evidence that was abandoned by the owner is no longer their property.  It's perfectly legal for Law Enforcement  to sift through a suspect's trash cans at the curb without a warrant.  The trash was not on private property, and the owner of the trash surrendered ownership and control over the trash as soon as he sat it by the curb for pickup.

The laptop is no different.  The laptop was voluntarily given to the repair shop for repairs, and subsequently abandoned.  If Hunter has walked in after a month and paid the bill, he may have gotten his laptop back.

We aren't talking about a Pawn Shop who makes money by selling collateral used for loans that never get repaid.  He's making his money on repair services.  He's not likely to illegally keep a laptop for its resale value.

If they came out with a similar situation on trump proving that he took bribes I would have the EXACT same outlook.  The way they gathered the information was incorrect.  I would personally not hold it against him.

You're a poor example of an IT guy.

When I transfer files to a new drive, I not only do comparisons to ensure everything copied, but I also log in as a regular user to make sure permissions are properly set.  That requires actually opening files under each directory that the users need to access.

It does the user no good to have a PC which only a SysAdmin can access or edit.

Duh.

Abandoned property doesn't require any effort on the shop's part.  If the receipt provided the policy and time limit, they aren't required to "make an effort to return it."

Quit making shit up.
