Now take off the IT hat.  Do you think your mother would do the same?  If she got a laptop repaired.  Should your mother have a reasonable degree of privacy, even though she isnt tech savy?   Privacy must be held  up from both sides.   You cant only say its the customer and not the other side.  Both sides must work.  Its a double layer of protection.  If the customer fails, the other side should also work to protect their rights.

Bullshit.

If my mother took her laptop into the shop KNOWING it contained evidence of a CRIME, then she's stupider than you are.

If, however, she has her bank accounts depleted because the owner used her saved browser info to log into the bank, use of the information to steal her money is a crime.

As I said before, privacy is not guaranteed.  What my mother might expect and what the repair shop actually does might not be the same thing.  Doesn't make her right and him wrong.

And the repairman was in his work environment.  Until the laptop was abandoned, I'm sure he respected the owner's data and kept it to himself -- except for the evidence of criminal activity which he has a duty to report to authorities.

Did you know people have been arrested based on reports from 1 hour photo developing labs?  They have busted all kinds of criminals, including pedos, because the criminals were stupid enough to think their photos are "private", and the developers have a duty to protect their privacy,

They were just as stupid as you sound.  Privacy?  Unless there's a contractual or legal requirement, the owner can run his business as he sees fit.  This is not a gov't agency searching for evidence.  It's a private business owner who stumbled across evidence of crimes and dirty dealings within the government.

What do you mean in bold?   If hunter picked up the laptop would you still want him to give the information up?

Making a backup before attempting a repair is 100% standard operating procedure.

If you've never done this, then you had a poor teacher -- and zero real world IT hardware experience.

Privacy only applies if the contract says it does.  Or, do you believe there's a "Customer-Provider Relationship" rule, not just for doctors, lawyers and spouses?

From the article I read he made a backup because of what he found and mainly concentrated on backup that info.  Also I believe he did the backup after the repair, which is ass backwards. You are correct to do a backup of files BEFORE the repair.

Customer-Provider Relationship  <-  Yes I believe in this. It should be mandated.

I have no interest in defending Biden or his kid though.  I just don't like how this happened.  Ethically, I am pro privacy and freedom.  Regardless of who and the outcome.  Like I said before if they got dirt on trump through unethical means I wouldn't support that either, even if I don't like the guy either.

It's nice that you are pro-privacy, but that in no way puts the burden of protecting your data on everyone else in your world.  That's 100% your responsibility.

Stop with the hypotheticals.  You're not good at it.

**IF** they got information on Trump illegally?  They did:  his income tax returns were put out by the press.  Talk about breach of privacy.  Only his lawyers & accountants and the US gov't had access.  How did anyone get his old returns?  And then to display that on TV?

Yeah.  There's no "what if" there.  It LITERALLY happened.

Why are you making up defenses that Biden’s team isn’t utilizing? You don’t find that  ???

Cause Team Biden is trying to quietly sweep this fiasco under the rug as quickly and quietly as possible.

Personally, I’d snoop through the guys shit if he stiffed me. Legally.

Evidence of a crime in plain sight should be reported to authorities.  No better way to say it.

If I walk into your bedroom (expected privacy) and see drugs on the dresser (evidence of crime), I can alert the police.  Unless I was acting as an agent of the police (informant, etc), the evidence I provide (testimony) is all they need to get a warrant.  I did not breach your privacy "rights", nor did the police.

Leaving a laptop unprotected in the hands of another person quashes any expectations of privacy.

it's really not a hard concept -- unless you just refuse to accept the truth.

This is the sad state of America.

Not just America, little Liberal boy.  It's plain old common sense.  If you have something that needs protecting, you can't expect anyone other than yourself to protect it unless you specifically have an agreement from someone else they will also protect it.  Why do you think the Gov't requires anyone with a clearance to sign an NDA?  It's so they can't disclose classified data and then claim they didn't know they had a duty to protect it (unless your last name happens to be "Clinton", of course).

I guess we are both very different.  In that situation I would act differently. I hold freedom and the right to privacy highly.

"Should be" is not a SYNONYM for "doesn't exist".  So, not a point.  Opinions are not facts.

As for the sequence of events, only the shop keeper knows the details.  What gets reported on the news is often based on misunderstandings, assumptions and just plain wrong.

Don't try to argue down in the weeds when the weeds aren't verified facts.

Republicans and America used to stand for freedom and privacy it's in the frigging constitution.  But I guess that means nothing.  Everything with you is personal responsibility.  Might as well not have government or rules.

So, if the law says "you have privacy", and the landlord finds evidence you committed a crime while fixing a faucet, you think privacy trumps being turned in for a crime?

You still have a right to due process, so if the evidence was illegally obtained or is actually not evidence YOU committed a crime, you'll not be charged/found guilty.

Your rights can be asserted during the judicial process.  But for some reason, you fear the justice system you defended in another post.

And I hold the rights of children to not be abused and molested higher than the privacy of a crackhead daddy's boy.

What do you mean fear? I believe the justice system serves a purpose.  But it must respect the laws.

As for the landlord I believe would lean yes I would expect privacy for the individual.
