AK magazines 101
« on: April 23, 2020, 11:33:15 AM »
Hey guys,

Just wanted to start a thread about AK magazines...

If anybody has knowledge feel free to weigh in.

Was wondering though if anybody knows how to tell the different type of steel magazines and their countries origin. (Eg china, Bulgaria, Korea, etc.)

I also own an arsenal Sam7 and so far Bulgaria, China, magpul, and Croatia mags have fit nicely.  However tapco and bakelites were a bit too tight in my receiver....

Anybody else got knowledge on identifying magazine (steel) origin?

Interesting.  I have a mags from a few different sources.  Korea, Croatia, and I think maybe one or two more.  I'll have to check them out.  Most I bought new or got from friends who told me the origin, so I can compare with some of the other steel mags that I have.  Other than Magpul, I have some Bulgarian polymer mags, but those have stamps indicating Bulgarian.

I generally have tested by trying, but I've heard that some brand/mfr receivers can be particular with mags. I've seen some guns that seemed to be more particular with the condition or shape of the lip on the front of the mag.  Luckily mine don't seem to be particular about mags.  One is an Arsenal milled and another is FEG Hungarian stamped.

i've been running mostly Magpul MOE (without the metal tabs) without problems through my Lee Armory AK.

i have a bunch of Croatian mags stocked up.  the croatian mags required minor grinding on the reinforcement above the rear locking lug.  there was some minor interference between that part and the cross support above the mag release.  the Croatian mags were individually packaged and covered in cosmoline.  they also come with a bolt hold open (BHO) follower.  because they're steel, i feel more comfortable leaving them loaded in an ammo box without having to worry about affecting the feed lips over time.

the magpuls are significantly lighter than the steel mags (obviously).

i've been looking for more of the Magpul sand mags; they were discontinued.  I dyed mine a bunch of different colors just because.

Or just buy an AR and all mags word.  Used hex, magpul, STANAG, all no issues.  Even reused my steel mags which are designed to be used once then tossed and have no issues.

Yeah I love my Bulgarian mags, I eventually want to just get all steel especially for storing!  Thanks for the info :shaka:

I got a few croations but never actually fired from yet... but mines fits nicely so I’m happy with them!!

I agree but I wanted a harder hitting round than .223/5.56 but didn’t want to go .308...

I own an AR as well so I’m on that boat too bro  :shaka:

Chinese mags have no ridge down the back.  And they're all more than 30 years old.
