Anybody dry firing or shooting pellet guns during this dry spell? (Read 12996 times)

Super Dave

With the range being shut down is anyone else enjoying pellet guns or dry firing to keep their skills up?  I have found that dry firing is better for training my brain than shooting one day a week at the range.  There are some really great pellet guns available these days and it's legal to shoot in your yard as long as the pellet stays on your property.  10 meters or even 25 feet is enough space to do some target work.

My dryfire sessions are a great way to destress after work.   For me, shooting or dry firing is a form of mediation and I get almost as much enjoyment as going to the range.

Looking forward to my session this evening.

Dave

Airguns have been my major shooting since the ammo panic of a while back, and the total lack of anyplace to shoot on the BI that does not involve a 2 hour drive and squalid conditions.

Most of my shooting has been rifles, to try and develop my skill using a scope.   Do have an old RWS 6G recoiless pistol that is crazy accurate.

A couple other CO2 pistols that do not get enough time.  My old Crosman 600 semiauto eats CO2 too fast to get used much.  No local CO2 cartridge source since Sports Auth and Kmart closed.

I have a Umarex G19 clone CO2 BB gun.  Holds 20 rds.  I have been using it a lot, drawing from the same holsters I use for my Glock 19.  I set up cardboard targets, soda cans hanging from a string, and plastic containers in the yard. I practice drawing from both concealed and open carry and shooting from anywhere between 3 to 10 yds.  I practice a lot of point shooting as soon as I clear the holster on those targets I got from Front Sight.

Sweet.

I don't have a pellet gun powerful enough to take down a chicken.  They are tough birds.

Ren, are you using the Scatt system?

The old spring rifles can be great.  My brothers R7 from the 80's is easy to cock and super accurate.  Targets from sighting in at different yardage.

My brother's and my BB guns from our childhood.

My daughters first shots on a trip home to Louisiana for Christmas in 2013.

My old, original, 1980 Red Ryder, another Crosman.  And new toys are a full auto Beretta M9A3 and DPMS SBR full auto CO2 fun.

I cleaned out the Pearl City Walmart of all their BB's, pellets and co2 cartridges.

I have a Diana LP8 and was actually trying out some new ammo this evening. Headshots only for the chickens which is quite a challenge, but it is great for practicing stalking, sight picture in various lighting conditions, and awareness of what is beyond the target. Can't do that at our public range.
If you dissolve your enemies in acid, technically that's turning your problems into a solution.

Take this with a grain of salt but I got some packs of CO2 from Wally World.

My problem with dry firing is I line up my sights with lines on the wall and don't flinch when pressing the trigger (sight stays level).  Even when drawing from holster.  But when I shoot for real, I still do flintch.  I think this is a mental aspect knowing that the gun will go bang and anticipating the bang.  Is there a way to train through this at home?  I even catch myself sometimes b4 pressing the trigger live.  I'll stop mid press because my barrel drops. Sometimes my friend standing next to me will see it and comment (in a supporting way, not a jerk way).

What dry firing from holster does do is target acquisition speed.

If you have a handgun with RDS, you can pick up pretty slight/fine muzzle movement pretty easy.  I have a SIRT as well, but haven't used that thing for a while. Maybe I should. . .

Our SIRT is always out on the coffee table or kitchen counter and is picked up constantly.

Hey Super Dave, I dry fire at a penny taped to a wall all the time.  Luckily, I haven't hit it yet ;)

Yeah, Old Fart, that's right, a penny.  With all the ammo I've sold I could put up a $5 gold eagle--hmm, maybe I will at that.

I've tried that but have a problem extending.  The penny falls off before I even press the trigger. Super glue

Mine is in a closet somewhere.  I got it a while back from Cliff after helping him with one of his classes.  I got one of the better models (at least at the time) with the weighted mag.  I mostly used it when helping with the basic handgun class, but haven't done that in years.  :(
