Using 243 at Puuloa Range?
« on: May 02, 2020, 11:12:45 AM »
My coworker was thinking about getting a 243 to eventually be used at Puuloa

Puuloa allows 243?

I suggested 30-06 because I think it is allowed at Puuloa and can still be supersonic at 1000 yards/meters

Puuloa is strictly 223rem, 308 win, and 30-06 spr and the metric equivenlants.  Things were a bit more lenient in the past, but no more.

It's due to the range specifications being centered around those military cartridges.  Everything is ballistically calculated for maximum flight distance, stray shots, riccochets, etc and the range is structured to accommodate those parameters.

Yep fully agree. Sad that the only "legit" range is at the mercy of the military rules.

atleast you have that place as an option. on maui on range we have is an outdoor range with 20o yards that is only open to the public 3 days a month. The first Sunday, second Saturday, and third Thursday. Some times we have a fourth Saturday. No indoor ranges.

The Big Island knows all about this.   Bigger than Rhode Island and Connecticut, mostly empty, but not a solitary rifle range other than the army's at PTA.

There is one "Range" just outside of Hilo on Saddle road.
I'm not sure of the mile marker, there is also the informal one on the MK access road.
Cops shoot on Kohala ranch, may be Parker
but I know where it is,  easy pickings
if you are so inclined.
I'd do Muana Loa
road.
Cops don't go there unless someone is dead.
BI is real Hawaii, Molokai is a close second.

Checked out mm16 before the TMT stupidity, big patch of bulldozed dirt, looked like you had to get there early to set up a shooting position.   On the other side of the island, so no getting there early.

also the informal one on the MK access road.
Looked on Google earth to try and spot anything, No luck finding it.

Private property, no doubt?  PM me on location, could be good info.

I'd do Muana Loa road.
No idea how to access that from the west side.

Having worked on worked on the projects to repair the rifle range backstops, the range SDZ can accommodate a range of calibers. I’d have to look up the range cert documents.

The operational procedures and agreements for use by other groups are a different story. Somewhat less restrictive at Schofield, but ultimately up to range control and Installation Commander.

Although PRTF has the 1000 yard range they do not allow civilians and club to shoot on it.  600 yard is the max.  They only allowed .223/5.56, .308, and .30-06 as stated above.

also note 55 grain .223 factory loads will not make it to 600 yards supersonic.
