Long gun re-newal
« on: July 01, 2020, 02:56:36 PM »
Hi gang,

Next week I have an appointment to re-new my long gun permit.  Never did it before.  Anything special I need to fill out in advance before I go to the office?

Also, my permit expires July 24, 2020.  So I need to show up 14 days prior (on July 10th) to apply for renewal, am I correct?

Thanks in advance for any help!  :shaka:

I just went in today to get my permit to acquire handguns and asked about renewing my long barrel before my permit expires.  The officer told me the long barrel permit has to expire before I can renew it. That's why I just cancel my appointment for August 3rd.

You don't need to show up 2 weeks before expiration.  That's the EARLIEST HPD will accept a renewal application, so you don't have 2 valid permits simultaneously.

Theoretically, if you show up exactly 14 days before the LG permit expires, you can pick up the new one and not have a lapse.  Unless you plan to buy a LG close to the expiration date, you will still be able to renew the permit after the expiration date with only the normal 14 day delay in buying & registering.

It's the same process for renewal as it is for a new LG permit.

The only thing extra is HPD requires you to return the existing permit.

So, if you have a LG permit, take it with you both when you apply and again when you pick up the new one.  If it's already expired when you renew, they will keep it regardless.

If you can't find your LG permit, HPD normally requires you to sign a statement explaining why.

When you say "show up", I assume you know there are no walk-ins accepted now, right?

That's not accurate.

They can't issue a renewal permit until the existing one expires is true.  BUT, you can apply for a renewal up to 2 weeks (14 day waiting period) prior to the expiration date.

This misinformation from HPD gets old.

Yes, I do have an appointment for 7/10 (re-new) and 7/24 (pick-up).  You say the process for renewal is the same as new permit.  Damn, that means I gotta fill out the forms again???!!! ::)  Oh well, ok, lol!  Damn this HPD...... ;)

And thanks for the info appreciate it!  I never did this before, since my long guns were purchased back in '78 and 79.

But now I'm retired so I have these long guns I wanna buy......

FFLs will be glad to hold your purchases until the permit is issued.    :shaka:

Awesome!!  Thanks! :shaka:

If you have not done it recently the permit pick up is on the rfirearms register side but at the same windows they use for traffic records. Figure I let you know to save you the dumb looks from the permit side if you go overthere to pick it up.which makes more sense. You fill out the paper work overthere.

When making an appointment it asks how many long guns you need the permit for.  What do you guys put down?  Isn't it supposed to be unlimited?

Just put one.  No sense in attracting unnecessary attention.

I'm thinking of doing the "mail to me the permit" option when I re-new my long gun permit on Friday.

Anybody ever do this?  Seems better than going over there, try to find parking just to pick up the permit.

You still have to go to the post office, provide a self addressed envelope, and make sure to get the exact services required for delivery.  That'll probably run about $12.

Trip to HPD to run in for five minutes, or trip to the post office that'll take who knows how long?  I guess it depends on which post office you go to.  Some are slow as molasses.

Yeah, I changed my mind.  I'll just go pick it up, lol!  My paranoid mind started thinking they could forget to mail it, misplace it, or just delay it just to mess with me. ;)
