I've carried my 17 when/where legal. No problems. Try different holsters. They can make a big difference.

Actually, this is true. A big factor is your body shape though.
With the proper holster and a well thought out choice of clothing you can effectively CC a G17.
If you MUST carry a full size gun, I recommend a pancake, strong side, behind hip.
Clothing must be appropriate for the weather though. Here in warm Hawaii, that would mean a loose aloha shirt, light windbreaker or a photographers vest.
The draw stroke takes some practice.
I've tried IWB behind hip and it was irritating to my soft sensitive skin. LOL.
Shoulder rig is pretty good for a full size gun. This is the most comfortable method.
If you have a compact or sub-compact, a fanny pack is the cat's meow, but you need to be very conscious of where that bag is all the time.
