Any local PCP air rifle shooters?
« on: August 25, 2020, 04:04:05 PM »
Aloha 2ahawaii,

Just wanted to see if there was a strong air rifle community here.  I'm just getting into the hobby and would like to meet others with experience in case I have questions and just talk story about this new money pit I discovered.

Acquired a used Taipan Standard Veteran shooting .25

Let me know what you guys got  :shaka:

Nice!  Are you pumping or charging via tanks?  Got my hang pump in yesterday.  Charged to only 112 bar and put it away.  Gotta wait till my tanks come back from hydro, I'll pump when I'm desperate.   ;D

Same, for target practice as well.  Fill from a scuba tank.

Usually shoot with aperture sights as a scope makes loading a pain with my fat fingers.  Helps keep my open sight skillz up.

I got the combo with the hand pump. Its a small cylinder so its not that difficult.

I’ve been ordering online but was curious if there are any local shops that support our hobby.
I’d prefer to leave my money here.

Young Guns in Mapunapuna. They do tank refills but I believe its only with tanks bought from them.

I was seriously considering getting a PCP rifle, but after seeing how expensive it was and the hassle of charging it, I decided to just use 22 shorts or subsonics in my Savage MkII for pest control.

I remember ordering my Benjamin Disco package (with pump) for $399 from Amazon in 2014.
This is the closest package that I can find right now. https://www.amazon.com/Benjamin-BPM22GPK-Maximus-PCP-Powered/dp/B01G9D0DBW/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=benjamin+discovery&qid=1599933611&sr=8-7

It doesn't take much with a hand pump to get the cylinder pressurized to the green level. Of course, with a bigger cylinder you will need more volume.

I thought it would take like 200 to 300 pumps to charge a pcp.

Depending on the size of the tank.  This is a fixed reservoir. Some you can change out like a paintball marker. 5 minutes of pumping will get me roughly 24ish shots.  I can turn the hammer spring and probably yield a few more shots per fill. It will all depend on the caliber and how hot you want your rifle shooting.

Easier if you have a scuba or SCBA tank to fill. I have old paintball tanks that are being hydro tested and will use to top off the last few hundred PSI.

I dunno, never used one.  Had an old scuba 2.6k tank that is good for the 2k fills for the Dicso.

Leaking O-ring in the rifle pissed away a lot of my last tank fill.   Thinking of picking up a used 3-3,5k tank.

Read a lot of messages about the hand pumps having mechanical issues, turned me off the $100+ for the supposedly good Hill  stuff with a dehydrator.

What advantages would a 22 or 25 cal PCP have over using a 22 rimfire with shorts or subsonic?  Would not the rimfire be cheaper, easier to use and have more power?

I can send .25 caliber 26 grain pellets 950fps.  Not sure on the sound levels compared to subsonic or shorts.

I’d say quieter with me being able to use a sound moderator.  Without, maybe the same level as a subsonic out of a standard rifle barrel? Not sure

Safer to shoot indoors/warehouse?

I justified my purchase as buying another .22 without the drawbacks of it being a firearm. Not considering initial cost.

Now I’m curious and looking up comparisons myself.
