The Democrats know they don't have the votes to stop her confirmation. Will they use procedural attempts to slow down the process and/or attempt to smear her in some way during the hearings?

I'd think they'd know that smearing her will activate more Trump supporters and maybe some undecideds, but being rational isn't necessarily a strong point with liberals. Can't wait for October 12, or whenever.

There's a rumor that the Dems are going to boycott the confirmation hearings, since they know, shy of some disqualifying bombshell, Barrett will be confirmed before the election.

I don't know if that includes the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee running the hearings or simply the rest of the Dem Senators and House members. I really HOPE they boycott it, because (1) it makes them look even more childish, and (2) it reduces the chance the hearings will devolve into another Kavanaugh debacle.

On the other hand, Dems who want to be in the 2024 Primaries will take this chance to get national exposure for themselves.

Interested to see how much of a tantrum the Dems will throw the next few weeks.

Well, I see some of them saying they will focus the attack on health care (Obamacare case early November at SCOTUS) claiming that 7 trillion people will be left to die in the streets if Barrett is confirmed.

I'd really love it if they boycotted, then the Judiciary Committee hearing would go something like this:

Chairman Lindsey Graham: "The Committee will come to order. No Democrats? Okay. Clerk, call the roll. All in favor of confirming Ms. Coney Barrett please say aye. Unanimous. Okay. That was easy. Committee adjourned."

I marvel at how there's a 99.99% chance of Barrett being confirmed, yet the Dems continue to attack her.  As if that will somehow play in their favor if/when an issue they care about is before her.

Justice Barrett:  "Senator Feinstein, I rule in favor of your opponent.  You may now present your opening statement if you think it'll do any good  .... "

Hirono is such an embarrassment ...

Democratic senator warns that Barrett will strike down Obamacare amid pandemic

Quote
Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that Supreme Court nominee
Amy Coney Barrett will strike down the Affordable Care Act if she is confirmed.

“Judiciary Republicans are prepared to vote for whoever the nominee is, but they want to push this person through
to steal yet another Supreme Court seat, to vote down the Affordable Care
Act,” Hirono said.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the future of the ACA on Nov. 10.

“She is going to strike down the Affordable Care Act in the midst of a pandemic, leaving millions and millions of people
without health care,” Hirono said.
The senator from Hawaii told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer she will not be meeting with Barrett ahead of confirmation hearings.

“I will not be meeting with her. I will take the opportunity to question her when she is under oath,” Hirono said.
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said he hopes the nominee will be confirmed by Nov. 1.

“We may not be able to stop it; we can slow it down. But the American people need to know
what's at stake,” Hirono said. “... And what’s at stake is their very health care.”

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/us-election-news-09-26-20/index.html

What did we learn from this article, boys and girls?

1.  Trump is stealing Supreme Court seats by exercising his powers and duties as specified in the US Constitution.

2.  This one new Justice will be the reason the ACA gets repealed if it ever does.  Not that the law, Constitution or arguments against keeping it are valid, but that a single judge will swing the court over to Trump's side.

3.  The Congress (House and Senate) have had 10 years -- since the ACA was passed in 2010 -- to fix any deficiencies that make the act vulnerable to repeal.  So far, they've done little to nothing in that regard.

4.  The Act (more aptly named the Unaffordable Careless Act) should have been repealed in 2010 based solely on the bill being passed (a) without a single Republican vote, and (b) the bait & switch the Dems pulled by passing the bill without a tax (but with a FINE or PENALTY), then changing it to a TAX so the SCOTUS would not say the bill was unconstitutional.  I believe this is a perfect example of taxation without representation.  Our representatives did not pass a TAX bill.

5.  The mandate has since been ruled unconstitutional.  Without that provision, the act cannot survive financially.  That's the main argument being presented in Nov to the SCOTUS.

6.  Lazy Mazie said they can't stop the confirmation, but they can try to slow it down.  Any motion she, or any other Democrat, makes in the hearing must have that motion considered in the context of this statement.  There can not be an assumption that any Democrat will be suggesting (demanding) anything which causes a delay as having been made in "good faith" .  Hirono tried to delay Kavanaugh's vote by demanding a month long FBI background investigation -- one which was done in a few days.  When they can't find a single person who can corroborate the accuser's story, there's really not much to do.     :geekdanc:

In case someone was wondering why the Senate should not delay this appointment, beyond what's already been posted, there's one aspect I don't think has gotten attention.

Let's say the Senate delays until after the election for any reason -- "muh decorum", Dem threats to retaliate, etc.  Then, after the election as long as the GOP still has a Senate majority, they will still confirm Trump's nominee in a lame duck session.  They have until January to do whatever they want before the new Congress/President are inaugurated.

This is the same tactic the Dems tried with Kavanaugh.  They knew they could not prevent confirmation with a Senate minority, so they were doing a "Hail, Mary," praying they became the Senate majority.

It didn't work 2 years ago, and it won't work this time.  The Senate has the power and the duty to consider Trump's nominee without unnecessary delay.  And the #1 issue that the Supreme Court will need to be ready to decide after Nov 1 will be a contested election.  They need all 9 seats filled to ensure they can decide the cases that may arise.

The irony is, the Dems are creating the #1 reason to not delay by increasing the probability there will be a contested election through their own actions:  changing state election rules (not counting any mail-in votes before election day, not allowing ballots with obviously mismatched signatures to be tossed, paying Democrat-leaning felons in FL so they can vote, etc.), and allowing ballot harvesting (private activist groups collecting ballots to turn them in).  Their attempts to cheat require that we anticipate legal challenges.  Good job, Dems!

True I would like to say it depends on who elected president. Republican or Democrat to be fair i would say 8 years that gives ample opportunity to both sides.  Unless you have a better idea.  Rules will be simple. If in those 8 years an abortion case gets heard by the Supreme Court if Amy votes to limit or eliminate abortion rights i win.  If she votes to keep the status quo or expand rights you win.  If no case is accepted by the court then the bet is void.

I read somewhere this morning that Trump has hired or activated dozens of lawyers in anticipation of a contested election.  But now I can’t find it. I believe it will be a huge fight.

That's impossible to prove question. All we know is based on the past she is anti abortion.   She's a devout catholic  which believes abortion is evil and wrong.  And she is quoted saying religion affects her life and how she lives it.  That's what the bet is about.

You’re gonna hurt their feewings.

This is an example of an uber Liberal (former co-worker’s wife). She’s a total TDS’er, rants about how Trump has divided this country, but posts stuff like this. Again blaming this on Trump.

Funny is she’s all girl power and stuff. Interesting how she’ll try to trash ACB.

It's an open-ended bet.  Nobody is going to bet you something that can't be claimed for a number of years.  The longer you stretch out the deadline, the better the odds are in your favor.

Barrett herself said it's highly unlikely R v. W will be overturned in the near future.  It's a non-issue for the majority of people.

p.s. You do know that betting is illegal in Hawaii, right?  Maybe you should reconsider taking bets on a public forum, genius!

There are 4 other Catholics on the Supreme Court.  She will make 5.

It's unconstitutional to consider a person's religion to be used for qualification or disqualification for public office.  I thought you worshipped the Constitution.  Maybe you should go back and read it.

Biden is a practicing Catholic.

Pelosi is a practicing Catholic.

I guess the only religious people you want to trust are the hypocrites who pretend to be Catholics and live their lives any damn way they feel like?

37% of the House of Representatives are Roman Catholic.  These are the people who actually draft, amend, pass, reject and repeal the laws the Supreme Court interprets.

Is it your opinion that the Supreme Court has more power than the 435 members of the US House of Representatives, the 100 members of the US Senate, and the President of the United States combined?

Your civics teachers failed you.

Not really if nothing is heard then no one wins... it's void. So the length of time has no effect. I'm not even saying it's going to pass im just saying she will vote to limit abortion.  Her religion or anything about her isn't part of this bet. It's literally only one thing.  How she votes, which side she votes on a case.

To be legal I've never said it had to happen in Hawaii. We can payout in a legal state. In just mostly trying to make a point.

The only point you've made is that you don't like her because she is not afraid of commitment.

She's committed to her family, her faith, her occupation, and her oath of office.

What you'd PREFER is someone who shares your ideologies and will follow those ideals above her obligation to follow the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress.

Ideologues like yourself are afraid of people who act according to principles, because you don't want to be held to the same standards as everybody else.  You want to have an advantage.

As such, you ASSUME that everyone else thinks like you do. What Liberals expect is for "Liberal" judges to follow their ideological beliefs, as opposed to Conservatives who want the have judges be consistent and constitutionally faithful.

p.s.  The payout location is irrelevant.  The Hawaii laws concerning gambling say wherever the bet is places, either the bettor's end or the bet takers location, makes it illegal if either is in Hawaii.  Look up Internet Gaming laws as they exist for Hawaii.

If the gaming server is in Barbados, and you are in Hawaii playing Texas Hold'em for money, you are breaking the law -- even if the money is changing hands via non-US-based banks.

if you are going to try to dodge laws, you should do more research, genius.
