Question on permit to acquire
« on: September 21, 2020, 07:04:46 PM »
Maybe you smarter folks can help me understand the system. Here on Maui, I called to get an appointment to get a permit to acquire a handgun from a friend here.  The good and polite folks at MPD informed me I have to acquire the gun so I can tell them what it is (Glock 45) before I can schedule an appointment to get a permit to buy it.  This puzzles my little brain.  What am I missing?

You need to tell them it's a private sale.  Sounds like they thought it was being purchased from a dealer.

Get the registration form control number for the current registration from the seller.  You should also get the details for the gun (make/model, action, caliber, barrel length) and the seller's name.

The easiest thing would be to get a copy of the current registration.  That'll have everything you need to know.

If they tell you that again, ask them how they expect you to "acquire" the gun before you have a "permit to acquire."

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Probably a miscommunication.  You don't actually take the gun home, just get the information for the gun so they can type it on the permit.
