Expensive Hobby - What’s Your Next One?
« on: October 16, 2020, 11:21:56 AM »
As firearms enthusiasts, we already have one expensive hobby. As least for most of us who actually shoot, not like #notarealdoctor. Haha

If you had some “extra” disposable income, for whatever reason, what could be the next hobby you take up?

Say you gave up a previously expensive hobby, or  even a “what if” scenario.

A bunch of friends are into Ham radios in varying degrees. Some of them have the “basics”, but some have gone completely down the rabbit hole and are trying to get me to follow them. O.o

I have a couple of buddies that are into drones, but that never caught my interest. Of course, not the inter-galactic ones. Haha

CNC router time mod firearms? I have one friend who makes custom putters out of his garage. Those machines are badass. Expensive as hell, but badass.

Early retirement.  To a cabin in the woods where I can shoot guns.  No, seriously.

I hate that term when referring to the aircraft - "drones" not as bad as bullets and "heads"
CNCs are decreasing rapidly in price

the learning curve is the CAD/CAM software. Right now I'm learning and using Fusion 360. Was using FreeCAD and shortly Solidworks. Of course, a user has to understand the materials being used as well and to troubleshoot the hardware. I'm about 3 years into 3D printing and CNCs (same concepts) and efforts are split between maintaining the hardware, learning about materials, and the software to generate the design and manufacturing processes.

That’s what they call them. FPV sounds like a disease. Haha. Hope I didn’t insult any FPV’s feelings.

Heads. Haha

It’s not far off. I’ve got an old farm house and 80 acres with a 50 yard pistol range and a 300 meter rifle range waiting for me in Wisconsin. Every time I have a rough day at work I remind myself what the bigger picture is.

Exercise?  Since lots of us are into guns and many use for self defense, 1 should also be in some shape.  Not bodybuilder, but able to last in a  tussle with another person.  At 1 skill builder, the shooters had to run/jog and many where out of gas after.  Like heart attack breathing kind.  Had 1 guy who's older (50s) and does crossfit and he was fine. He wasn't even breathing hard.

Force on Force classes pretty much don't exist in HI, but being in some shape is what everyone can do.  Plus it's good for the health.  I'm not a fan of BJJ cause going on  your back is a huge mistake, especially with multiple attackers.  There is a Krav Maga class across Beretania Safeway, but IDK if open due to CV.  And they don't do much strenght/endurance training, more skills training.  So strength and endurance is something you would have to do on your own.

Yeah, but that can be done without a lot of expense. I agree that one should supplement firearms training with other training. That pursuit of that training can get expensive, but I lump that with the firearm expenses.

It’s been years since I did BJJ, but it’s not all about fighting from your back. There’s a lot to be learned from the techniques in a SD situation. That said, if or when the fight ends up in the ground likely wouldn’t be your first choice (at least I assume), but better to have the knowledge than not. IMO.

Force on force is one. Had a bunch of shooting friends that were planning on getting together regularly and doing the airsoft and even sim stuff, but the guy who would have hosted on his ranch came across some family issues. Then it never came up again. My other buddies’ kids are all into airsoft, but those little effers are super fast and actually really good shots. Haha

Boats is surely one. I was tempted to buy a boat when I lived in WA, but didn’t have a stall to park at my house and couldn’t afford dock fees. Luckily, two coworkers has boats and they often needed a fishing buddy, so I got to go out on the water often. One close friend now has a boat and goes out regularly. He has invited me many times, but he gets up way to early.

Cars is another, and car stereos. Never really got I to either though.

2 miles? I’d like to see many just run one lap around the track and shoot a pistol at 10 yards.

Always wanted a marina house in Hawaii kai and a boat for when I am stressed at work and just want to head out and fish or chill.  Cars I've always loved those fancy exotic cars and racing.  But on a island with no race track and traffic a nice car is wasted lol.

Not you. I figured you can.

I'm sure everyone that goes to the range on weekends can.

Run/jog a lap and then shoot a decent group without a lot of time to recover?

I’d actually pay to see Inspector try it. 😝
