Been catching up on Halloween movies.  I think it's been a really long time since I watched the 20 year anniversary film, Halloween H20.

So many Easter Eggs in this movie.  It's really fun rewatching it.  Not only for the film itself, but the cast, too.  Some of the "kids" have grown up into Hollywood stars themselves.

Jamie Lee Curtis is of course in the role of Laurie Strode (aka Keri Tate), Michael Myers' sister. 

Jamie's real life mother, Janet Leigh, was a "Scream Queen" herself in the movie Psycho.  In H20, she played a character named "Norma" (throwback to Norman Bates, of course), and exits her last scene in the film driving the 1957 Ford she drove in Psycho, complete with the same license plate number. 

The spoof movie, Scream, is playing on a TV, which took much of its "Rules for Slasher Films" from Halloween.

Some things are just better after 22 years (No, not talking about OmniGun!  ).

The "Made you jump!" effects and devices are almost as good as the original Halloween.

Or the first couple of Alien movies. I like the second one better.

I think that came to mind from an old Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy joke.  He pissed off his wife, and she got all forgiving on him and said,

"That's okay.  I'm not mad.  Why don't you go to bed ... and go sleep."

It takes a lot of trust to sleep next to someone for 43+ years.

The first Halloween, at the end when Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) emptied his revolver in MM and MM goes over the balcony, the said they were debating two reactions to making the movie. The first was when Sam ran to the balcony, only to see MM body gone (meaning he was still alive), he was to have a look of shock. The second reaction, which made it to the film, was more of “I knew he’d still be alive, wonder where he went....”. That reaction was much creepier to me.

The Shining is a movie that really frightened me.  Actually the book by Stephen King shook my imagination and the movie brought it out in livid color.

How the movie portrays evil thoughts slowly taking over the mind and becomes the driving force in a persons actions is just too real for me.

Another earlier movie that terrified me to no end was the Exorcist.  The fact that it was based loosely on an actual event made it more terrifying.   

I was so focused on spelling Vivian Leigh's name, I misspelled Jamie's.

"Lee" for her mother's name, and "Curtis" for Tony Curtis, her father.

I remember seeing that in a documentary of the making of the movie.   

The 1978 movie Halloween was the first R-rated movie I ever went to without an adult accompanying me.  I took 3 Freshman girls that rode the school bus I drove and was their "adult" in the group.

I was 2 months shy of 17, and I think the usher either didn't notice or didn't care.   The way the usher grinned at me, I think he might have let me in just for taking 3 girls to a horror movie!   

When we left the movie theater, I had bruise impressions on my arms from all three girls grabbing me every time something scary either happened or they just thought something was going to happen.  The first part of the film after the escape from the asylum was almost all "Made you jump!" moments that weren't anything scary.

That movie will always be one of my favorite memories from high school and one of my favorite horror films.  Still get goosebumps from the piano music.

Candyman creeped me out for a while. It came out when I was in HS. A group of friends watched it together. Looking in the bathroom mirror after that was, uh, interesting.

Poltergeist was also creepy when I was little.

Gory movies like Saw and Hostle are disturbing that assholes think up stuff like that.

BTW, one of the more interesting trivial facts about Halloween is the producer had a screening for a studio exec before they had the music score written.  The exec was very disappointed in the film.

They set up a second screening with the music added.  The exec said she's never been as scared from watching a movie.

Most horror thrillers rely on the score to set the mood.  In fact, someone asked Alfred Hitchcock if Psycho would be near as scary without its great score, like the screeching violins in the shower scene.  He took that as a challenge, and he made one of the most terrifying movies of his career with absolutely no musical score.  That movie was The Birds.
