What would scare me is meeting myself in a dark alley.

Cause really ugly!   No need Halloween mask.
I think, therefore I am armed.

Scariest stories for me have always been about the evil real people do.

Stories like Silence of the Lambs was probably one of the scariest I ever saw in theaters.  Those kinds of things can and do happen in real life to some degree of severity or frequency.

John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, The Green River Killer, Scorpio, Son of Sam, various "Stranglers", Jack the Ripper, William "The Freeway Killer" Bonin ... all the serial killers' stories scare me to death, because that stuff actually happened and can happen anytime, anywhere.  These mass shootings around the world are just another facet of that same mass murderer/serial killer theme.

I think it's one reason there are so many popular scary stories and involving escaped mental patients (Michael!!).  We know they are out there ---  somewhere ... maybe even reading this!

For me it is being confronted with the idea of suicide as a way out, like you are about to get eaten by zombies but only have one bullet left. Easy choice for the secular but if you believe in an afterlife things get complicated.

That's why you never go anywhere alone in the Zombie Apocalypse.

I watched the movie about a serial killer (can't remember which one right now) and how the people around him, even his wife during a big part of the killing window wasn't aware.

While I like shows like Criminal Minds, sometimes the stuff that they come up with make me think "what kind of sick fcuk thinks up something like that".  That kind of stuff of what he human mind can think up scares me.

The Iceman (2012)

Quote
The story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally
arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters had any clue about his real profession.

I saw that movie.  Michael Shannon's acting was awesome.  Showed what a true sociopath looks like.

Serial killer movies and movies like Silence of the lambs are really scary movies.  The mystery of what goes on in seemingly normal people's minds is what is terrifying.

I don't feel at ease with strangers that look at you without blinking and wear a half crooked smile. :shake:

Thats why I can't look at Joe and Kamala without shivering and looking away....... ;)

Right or wrong. Heaven or hell. Conservative or liberal. It is all binary thinking trying to make a complex situation more simple in order to influence and control the kind of people who prefer not to think for themselves. Results are what matters, and church attendance has been declining rapidly for a while now while the numbers of religious unaffiliated have been climbing. With a depressing messages like H&H it is no wonder people have difficulty keeping the faith.

Heaven doesn't seem that depressing.

Interesting. Not sure why humans can't just live a good life to live a good life and pass on good memories. Until they invent immortality the only thing of you that lives on earth is the memories of yourself or your accomplishments.  If there is a afterlife, than that can be a bonus.  Fear shouldn't be everyone's only motivation.

Have you ever been out with friends or maybe on a date with a girl and everything is going great, you just want it never to end? Not the greatest of analogies but perhaps somewhat illustrative?

I know life will end, I know that if there is no afterlife I will never know the difference, yet it still gives me anxiety somewhat. I don't want it to end, I don't know how else to put it.

But if there is definitely no afterlife whatsoever it would be nice to know, would make some different choices in this current life.

If you haven't, you should watch the movie, "Defending Your Life."  Meryl Streep, Albert Brooks and Rip Torn star.

It's a comedy about death.

Basic premise:  when you die, you go to this holding center, like a resort mostly, where you have to defend your life -- in the courtroom sense.  You're shown parts of your life that were potentially negative, and you have to explain to the judges' satisfaction why what you did was not as bad as how it appears, maybe even come up with some rationale as to how it was a good thing.

Anyway, if you are successful, you get to go on to heaven,  If you're not ready to go forward, you go back -- to Earth -- as a newborn -- to try again. And you'll keep going back to Earth death after death until you earn the right to advance.  Kind of like reincarnation, except for the whole sacred cow thing.

It's not meant to provide answers as much as entertain while giving us something to think about.  Don't want to spoil it, but an unsuccessful life has a specific theme, and a successful life has the opposite.  One part of your character makes the difference between living a full life and just surviving.

I find it so horrible that our government officials can do so much evil and claim it needs to be done for the good of the public.

I understand i have the same anxiety,  hence wish to be immortal.  But I do think i can be decently moral without the fear of getting punished in the end.
Imagine how weird a system would be if the first 100ish years if your life determines the next 1000000+ years
