I saw a knockoff at Home Depot yesterday for $30. It is probably a piece of garbage but the price kind of shocked me.

I realize its just cheaper to just buy one than to replicate the tech behind it specifically OcuSync 2.0. I've used OpenHD for video transmission, searched for and bought a handful of Wifi dongles over the years to make it work. Can't find the older Ubiquiti ones. I also bought the required Raspberry Pis for the video processing on the air and ground sides.

Yep.  Like all other computer-based hobbies, there's a never-ending revolving door for Open Source, new manufacturers, and existing manufacturer's latest product line.  Unless you have the attitude, "What I have satisfies my current needs," you'll be sucked into more/improved features, longer battery life, better video viewing & recording, better autopilot versions, greater range, ... 

Still & video photography alone becomes a can of worms, and that represents just one function/subsystem on a drone.
