Looking to make shooting frames for koko head, the rifle is straight forward. But I need to know the orientation of the pistol frame. Does anyone have a picture or can explain it to me. Appreciate the help.

There are special restriction on the pistol targets vs rifle side to follow.  Since you said "orientation", I assume that's what you meant.

The frame itself is just 2 legs/sides connected to 2 horizontal pieces at the top and middle.  If you know woodworking terms, the long pieces are the stiles, and the short pieces are the rails.

On the rifle side, you can stack round circles vertically.  In fact, you don't have much of a choice doing anything else based on the recommended frame design.

On the pistol side, you can't use targets that resemble a human silhouette.  if you stack two round targets, apparently that resembles a human -- a human with a perfectly round head the same size as his perfectly round body?  So, either post ONE round target on the frame at a time, or place them side-by-side.  I use 10" targets, which fit fine next to each other.

that wasn't the explanation that was given to me regarding the stacking of targets. The reason is that if a person stacks targets at 25yds, especially with less experienced shooters there is a risk of hitting the target carriages at the 50 yard line when aiming at the lower target.

When you see the brackets at the range where you insert the frame's legs, there's no other way to construct it than having the boards laid out flat on a floor (3" side face-up)..

BTW, in case you didn't know, a nominally sized piece of lumber is smaller than the stated measurements.  A pine 1x3 board is actually going to be more like 2-1/2" x 3/4".  Hardwood like oak or walnut usually comes cut to actual dimensions.  Just FYI.

I've seen that explanation and it makes no sense to me. 

If that was a concern, they would simply make the target frame size narrower top to bottom by raising the center horizontal piece enough to prevent shooting at that angle.  As it is, nothing stops me from attaching my targets grounded to the bottom edge of the frame. 

What if I have a short person shooting?  it would be safer to have the targets on a flat plane (low) versus having to shoot upward.

I've never seen anything stating targets on those frames must be centered, or can't be grounded at the bottom, for any reason.  Maybe they started posting that as a rule since my last visit?  It's been awhile.

Just not computing in my engineering mind.

I like to build my frames with folding legs to make them easier to transport.
Just use bolts with washers and wingnuts. It's not rocket science.
I also use cheap glue clamps to secure the frame legs to the metal carrier at the range.

I also use cheap or scrap lumber since the target frames are lead magnets.

I never bothered to actually find out why we stack targets side by side at the pistol range.  I just figured it prevents people from shooting too high and risk a bullet flying over the mountain.....lol!!

All you need are 2 pieces of 1x3s 4 feet tall and just clamp a piece of cardboard between them. Basically 2 sticks

I've always heard the human-shaped silhouette explanation for the pistol side as well. I guess this doesn't make sense since the rifle side targets are stacked. Your answer about not hitting the back carriages makes more sense.

It makes sense if you figure most criminal uses of firearms involve handguns. Practicing with a human-shaped silhouette and a handgun somehow demonstrates a desire to shoot people -- something they fear would be used against the range ("They're training gun owners to kill people!").

Rifle targets usually include more than 2 targets stacked, so it is less likely to resemble a person.  Also, you can leave some separation between them since there's more useable space.

It's a silly rule.  The shooting high or low explanation to me doesn't hold water, and the human shape explanation is just ignorant.  Given the state of gun laws in this state, I'd bank on "ignorant".   

If shooters wandered out to the 50 yard target holders, they would find that the right side holders have more damage than the left side. The berm that is supposed to protect the steel holders have been eroded by many years of low hits splashing the dirt and chipping away at the CMU retaining wall.

 The left side target holders are in better shape due to less erosion and more care by the club that uses that side for competitions. The left side 25 yard targets are still capable of turning as originally designed. Most of the 50 yard targets on the left side can still accept the 1x3 wood legs of the target frames the club supplies for matches. The right side 50 yard target stands have taken many hits and are damaged to the point that many cannot hold the frames anymore.

 Side by side targets help prolong the life of the berms and target stands. The city does not want to do any repairs or improvements to the range and there are people looking for any excuse to shut it down.
