As a woodworker, I only wear a mask when necessary.  I use dust collection to keep the dust out of the air in the first place.  Anything still in the air is not a problem, as I work on a covered lanai.

The amount of time I use a dust mask is minimal -- usually for a few minutes as needed.  Plus, if I feel I need  to, I can take a short break away from the work area and REMOVE the mask.

If I'm working a job that requires my presence 8-10 hours a day, and there's no place to take a break without being around other people, that means I'm wearing a "COVID" mask for hours at a time.

People who worked in a mask pre-covid could take the mask off in areas in which they didn't need it EVEN IF there are other people in the area -- as opposed to COVID where PEOPLE are the reason to mask up.

Masks that protect against particulates and microbes are not necessarily designed to keep out vapors (odors).

Even of you can't smell certain odors, it might not filter harmful vapors like cleaners, solvents, fuels, or certain paints and varnishes.
