Cognitive Dissonance - how to spot it? Do you have it?
« on: November 16, 2020, 10:48:18 PM »
Cognitive Dissonance is when your thoughts are in dissonance with actual “reality”.

Scott Adams (yes, the Scott Adams, author of the Dilbert comics strip) has a really good video that talks about ways to spot cognitive dissonance.

Is the other guy on this forum suffering from it?
Am *I* the one suffering from cognitive dissonance?

Considering the going back and forth (“You!” “No, u!”) in threads in this forum, please take the time to watch this video to assess if *myself* is the one having a disconnect between thoughts and reality.

I think, therefore I am armed.

Not wanting to take my own thread off topic but just want to comment that Scott Adam’s videos are pretty interesting.

He has quite a bit of commentary (almost daily) of the current happenings.  Here’s the link to his channel if you want to hear his view of reality from his filter / lens.

Ok, back to topic.

The thing about Dilbert is the situations, if not the dialogue, were based on actual, real world office dynamics within the technology fields.

Nothing is as funny as stupid stuff that really happens.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Interesting video.
I spent a lot of my life fixing things,
it became really obvious if your decisions were invalid.
the damn thing still doesn't work as ut is supposed to do.
As I transitioned to engineer I went to designing things
due to the nature of that work, it became obvious if you
made bad decisions not only did it not work, you were
now responsible, and held responsible professionally and
economically.
Since I spent a large portion of my life dealing with aircraft
that is life and death.
I've had it beat into my head.  Just because you believe
something "don't make it so".
You challenge everything.  The assumption is
ALWAYS not only is the other guy full of shit,
so are you. I had to use a variety of tools
to convince other people to accept my decisions.
And if I could not convince them, to accept, my decision,
I'm wrong, and I need to correct myself and
come up with another option.
The world doesn't give a shit about my faith, beliefs, or feelings
the only thing that matters is results.
That is it.

I have rhetorical dissonance
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

I recognized many flags in acquaintances (can't really call them friends) I have on social media.  Particularly the word salad and the single variable.

I think comes down to how you were brought up, your morals and values. And what your willing to live with.

HOw do you know someone is a vegan, they tell you constantly.  How do you know someone does crossfit, they tell you constantly.

Learned about this concept in school: A simple example is the people who choose to shop at Walmart and buy all the made in China products, but in their hearts they want to buy products made in USA.

*Just bought a made in the USA toilet seat, over the half price Chinese options cause ‘Murcia.
