What size paper targets for a beginer?
« on: July 25, 2012, 02:49:00 PM »
Is the 12" X 10 1/2" paper taget too small for a beginer?  I was looking at buying the NRA B-16 100 pack.  Is there something bigger that would be better to start with?

Thanks,
Chuck

Assuming you're shooting at the state-run ranges, where the closest you can shoot a handgun is 25 yards and the closest you can shoot a rifle is 50 yards, bigger is better!  I'd buy a roll of butcher's paper and cover my whole target frame with white, then staple a target on top of that.

That also works really well when sighting in a new gun.  It's much, much easier to tell when you're on the paper when the whole backdrop is free of holes!

My next purchase of targets will either be printing a target off the Internet on an 8.5"x11" piece of paper or I'll buy 500 paper plates and put a quarter size dot on them. I use that same quarter size dot for my 25yd pistol, and 50yd and 100yd rifle targets. I prefer the bright orange dots cuz my eyes seem em better than black dots or black target backgrounds. I'll probably print like 8 small targets for rifle or one larger target for pistol.

I designed my own targets, which I print on 11x17 paper at work.  One is for iron sights (specifically front blade), the other for scopes.  Both have a 1" grid superimposed, which makes for easy adjustments.

You can see them here, if you like.  BTW, the iron sight one is upside-down.

I started with the paper plates and quarter sized dot at Koko Head too. At 50 yards, it's a good sized target. Just concentrate on hitting the plate at first, and don't get too wrapped up on getting all your hits within the quarter sized dot while shooting irons in the standing. Take it easy on yourself and start challenging yourself little by little more when you go to the range.

what's really helping me shoot is these huge 18" Shoot-n-c targets. I can see where I'm hitting and adjust accordingly
When I shoot at 8 or 10" targets I mostly hit the cardboard and never know where I'm shooting. If I could I would make the whole piece of cardboard full of shoot-n-c

If you really want to, paint the board a bright water based color the. Spray paint two layers of oil based spray paint. Voila! Ginormous shoot-n-see target!

For beginning shooters, I would use targets with larger bulls, say the 25-yd slow fire pistol target with a 5-1/4" bull at 7, 10 and 15 yards.

I was going to suggest the butcher paper with smaller printed targets hung on them which somebody already suggested.  At the range, I just buy full-sized Transitional II targets and hang them up backwards.

Stapling the smaller targets on the bigger paper doesn't work too well.  I prefer keeping a roll of masking tape in my possibles bag for this.

Rather than printing out small targets, I found several methods to make small bullseyes on regular 8 1/2 X 11 inch paper.  One is to take a sewing spool and wet it on a regular black stamp pad  and impress it on the paper (or pie plates)  with something soft underneath.  Another is to take a liquid shoe polish dispenser with a round sponge top and just press it on the paper.  Like so:
