Your useless but interesting facts

Useless thoughts you have that make you go hmmm.

If the earth instantly stopped rotating, you'd go flying to the West at 967mph in Honolulu.  A bit faster if you live on the south side and at higher elevations, a bit slower if you live on the windward side.   If you should survive that somehow, the huge supersonic tsunamis or air blast would kill you.

People at or near the north and south poles would survive along with those flying in the air and space.

If you could drive straight up to space, it would only take you roughly a hour at highways speeds to get there.

The earth is rotating at 1,000mph.  And we feel no centripetal force.  But the tea cups at Disney land spin a lot slower and yet we are pushed to the edge of the cup.

A Volcano erupts and the smoke shoots up and barely moves even though the earth is spinning at 1,000mph.  But a steam powered locomotive traveling at 88mph will leave a huge steam trail.

How long would it take if Honolulu's high speed rail went straight up?

The record for the longest overdue library book is 288 YEARS!

it was borrowed in 1668 from the Sidney Sussex College.

Fortunately, no late fees were due.   :geekdanc:

The planet Uranus was originally named "George."

It was named by the astronomer William Herschel as Georgium Sidus, Latin for "The Star/Planet Of George."  He was the first to discover it was a planet or asteroid rather than a star.  As a reward, Herschel was named the official Court Astronomer by King George III.  To honor the King, Herschel named the planet after him.

Other astronomers didn't like a planet not following the pattern of other planets named after mythological Greek gods.  It was also deemed too "England-centric." They suggested other names, and Ouranos was the favorite.  The spelling was obviously modified to Uranus

The name "George" lasted 70 years.

"J" was the last letter added to the English alphabet, not "Z".

The ridges on coins were put in place in the 1700's  to see if anyone was scraping off the edges of the coins when they were made of materials that were worth what the coin was worth.
e.g. A  half dollar silver coin contained fifty cents worth of silver. and a $10 gold coin contained $10 worth of gold.
