Hornady knows their stuff, so I'd have no problem trusting their self-defense ammo.  A lot of people like Speer Gold Dot because it has the advantage of being widely issued by various major law-enforcement agencies around the country.  That provides you with a pretty much airtight defense if you end up at trial for a self-defense shooting.  The DA may want to make noise about how you were a crazed sociopath who loaded his gun with super duper cop killer anti-matter hollowpoints, but if it's the same stuff used by HPD, or the FBI, or some other outfit like that, he won't find much traction.  I use Remington Golden Saber, because that's what OGC had the last time I was buying JHPs.  Next time I stock up I think I'm making the switch to Gold Dot.

I use and will be doing the same.

Speer Gold Dot 124 gr in my Glock 17.

I have a mix of Remington Express 155 gr (Fed duty ammo) and Fiocchi HP ammo for my HK USP 40c.   My main HD/SD gun is my Glock, so I don't shoot the HK much anymore.  I used to buy Federal Hydrashock 165 gr, but that was many years ago and I haven't tried Federal's new JHP ammo.

side note: a lot of people including one LEO think that hollow points illegal :geekdanc:

"do you keep your gun loaded at home?"
"yep, 10 in the mag and 1 in the chamber, all hollow points"
*eyes get wide* "hollow points are illegal, how'd you get those?"
"naaaah, they're legal, and can be bought at pretty much all gun shops"

I actually face-palmed when I read this interaction.  Here to illustrate what happened, for your viewing pleasure, is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Starfleet:

What cop was that??

.38 Spl 125 gr Hornady XTP in SP-101

9mm 147 gr Speer Gold Dot (bought OGC's last box during the SSF)

Found out that Security Equipment Corp sells 50 round boxes of 9mm 147 gr Speer GD...I'll be buying that whenever I feel the need to cycle through the ammo.

What the deuce?  Why would they refuse to sell the stuff to private citizens?  And how would limiting their market reduce the price?

When I asked for the 9mm GD, he grabbed me a box of 50. I don't look like a cop. That was more than I needed anyway, so I asked for the 20 rd box.

not sure why
i am assuming that they have a deal from the manufacturer or supplier, or else HPD is subsidizing

Winchester's bonded Ranger ammo is LEO-only. Winchester asks that it be sold only to LEO as a condition to selling it to the dealer. Gotta have a cop buddy buy it for you.

That's what i've heard from magnum about a lot of the "good" hollow point rounds.  Gold dot, ranger T, HST etc.  I managed to get 1 box of 50 rounds of gold dot from magnum after purchasing my 1st handgun from them, however they never sold me another box of any of the brands previously mentioned again.
