I like to use the FCD bc a couple times I had bulging cartridges that were hard to fully seat in the cylinder, I just pushed them in and was hard to eject
after using the FCD, no more that problem. 
some people say no need this step, but I like to take my time and do this extra step to make sure its sized correctly and add a little extra crimp accordingly

I use the FCD with 9mm. My rounds won’t pass the gage test without using the crimp die. It is the only round I load for that headspaces on the front of the cartridge.

I use the crimp die with all of my pistol rounds anyway. Especially for magnum rounds. You don’t want your bullets to walk under hard recoil.

I have a Lee fcd for 45acp. It makes a fine crimp for that caliber. But I don't use it because my Dillon taper crimp die seems to work just fine as well.

A lot of people condemn the product for one reason or another. I think those naysayers forget that the design is different for each caliber. Therefore when passing judgement on the product, they tend to try to lump everything together. Eg.the 45 fcd works well but maybe the 38spl does not. It's like saying all Toyotas are crappy because my 4runner leaked oil.

What you said is really true. There are different crimp types for each cartridge.
