2A Hawaii Safe Harbor
« on: January 11, 2021, 04:42:25 AM »
All,

Please read this entire post before acting upon this invitation.

I have created a chat group on Signal. This is for anyone who is a member here. This exists for the purpose of having a safe harbor or rally point in order to maintain communications with the people on this forum. If for some reason this forum gets censored or brought down come to Signal and we can strategize what our next move will be. With Signal your connection is encrypted end to end. A VPN will also enhance your privacy if you want to add this to your device or computer.

In order to participate in this chat group you must first create an account at Signal.com, or download the software to your computer and create your account, or download the app onto your device and you can create your account through the app. Please be aware that in order to use Signal you must have a phone number. You do not need a phone with a screen. Just a phone number with a working phone and possibly you may need an email address in order to sign up. That phone number will be open for all on the 2A Hawaii Chat Group to see. You can buy a burner phone if you want to be completely autonomous. Less than a dozen people have stated they want to participate.

Also, we have come up with a process that will verify you are who you are. You will need to let JL808 know you wish to participate on the 2A Chat Group and let him know what your email address is. He will verify that you are who you are and he will inform me to make you part of the group. Also, you must put your 2AHawaii screen name in your first name or last name box so we know on Signal who you are. You can include your partial or full name as well if you desire. So there are multiple levels of being anonymous that you can have. After you have been verified by JL808 then log in to Signal and search for “Two Alpha Hotel” and then request to be made a member of the group. That’s it. If you and I are already connected through phone numbers, or another social media sight just text me directly and you can avoid the verification process with JL808.

Please reply here OR PM me with any questions or issues you might have.

Ar15.com is reporting problems with Google's DNS servers.  Could be the start of a crackdown or someone didn't pay the internet bill, take your pick.

Confirmed.  They are cutting our lines of communication.  Good thing we set up a signals group as a contingency.

Confirmed.  They are cutting our lines of communication.  We need M4C hardened or migrated to a foreign service provider ASAP or we will be next.

The Internet itself is a voluntarily-donated bunch of servers, routers and other network appliances interconnected to form a vast worldwide digital network.  Even if Google's DNS servers are down or compromised, they are not the only source for DNS resolution for IP addresses.

If you have a subscription service to an Internet provider, you can use their DNS.  Most people leave their network settings on automatic, which assigns the service provider's DNS settings to the device/computer.  When you connect to a hotel or hotspot router, the automatic settings are assigned.  Manually overriding the DNS settings can cause problems moving from router to router as the servers you select may not be publicly accessible like Google's servers are.  Either leave the DNS settings on automatic, or make sure the servers you select can be accessed from any network.

If you manually set your DNS servers, it's always a good idea to have multiple servers from multiple providers in your DNS list in case the one you normally use is unavailable.  If the DNS server you have as primary is "having problems" but is still reachable, you'll need to manually modify your router's or device's DNS list and move a reliable server's IP to the top of the list.

There is an Open DNS project that allows public access, just like Google.  The 2 IP addresses are:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

If you can add more than 2 DNS servers to your router or device, I'd recommend putting the Open DNS servers first, then Google, then your Internet Service Provider's IPs.

Hope this is helpful.

Ah here's the real reason.

Don't expect this backup site to be on for much longer.   Also hosted by Amazon.

If I was more of an entrepreneur I would open a freedom hosting business for all these companies purged.  Good money to be gained there.  But lots of legalities to be worked out.  The freemarket should fix this problem, in due time.  I still can't fault GoDaddy they have the right to do this.  Just like someone has the right to choose who rents their property.  I just personally find it sad and unfortunate.

Signal. ORG!
I can't get it to work.  I'll spend a day or so fighting
with it, but count me in in any event.

Inspector mentioned the Windoze software for we that do not do smartphones, but it looks like it wants to communicate to such a device after you install it.

No way I can see to use it on a PC to communicate.

While a private company has the right to choose who they allow on their servers, they also have a contract in place.  They can't summarily cancel service for a website operator without consequence unless the customer violated the contract first.

Parler announced they are suing Amazon today.  I expect every other website being kicked off service provider servers will sue for breach of contract as well.  Unfortunately, depending on the damages requested, these cases can take months or even years.

As far as being a 2A-related site owner:  if you don't already have a backup and recovery plan, as well as alternate hosting plan, in place BEFORE something bad happens, then you might not be paying attention to the world in which you operate.

I hope Amazon -- one of the deepest pockets ever -- is hit with a multimillion dollar award/settlement.  They need to learn a lesson.

You can link Signal Desktop to your mobile device to send and receive Signal messages from your laptop or desktop computer.

Can I install Signal Desktop without a mobile device?

Signal Desktop must be linked with either Signal Android or Signal iOS to send and receive messages.

Signal requires a phone number for a reason.  That's the primary messaging device/app you'll need to setup Signal.

The computer software is linked to your phone to access and send messages.  Without a phone, there's nothing to link to your computer.

When I was doing this it gave me a choice of 2 or 3 different ways of verifying your phone number. That was only one way. But I did it with a phone app not the PC version. I’m sorry if it isn’t working for you.

Interesting video,  I think bitcoin has a potential to solve the financial part of the issue. As for distribution, similar to TOR a decentralized solution might be possible.  Everyone buys a little box and stores a bit of the internet everywhere,  with a decentralizing.   Decentralization has the potential to solve all the monopolies.   But yes, its definitely a difficult journey.
