HGS transfer policy, fair/unfair, friend or foe?
« on: January 14, 2021, 08:01:28 AM »
Is anyone aware of the HGS firearm policy that basically states.

1.Two months after purchasing a firearm if you don't have the gun transferred to you they will start charging a percentage of the price of the gun
2. Each subsequent month that passes by another percentage is charged
3. If the penalty reaches the value of the gun they will reclaim ownership of the gun to resell.

I'm just curious how every feels about this policy given the current climate of gun registration and how hard it is to get appointments. I understand that, shops don't want to hold your guns for an extended period of time but at the same time, its not like you are leaving your junk there. How do you all feel about it?

Have you spoken to HGS about this?

I haven't gone through the process, but I would think that they would make reasonable accommodations.  That they don't want folks just assuming they can store the guns while things with registration are ironed out.  I think that policy is also a holder-over from "previous work experience".

If strictly implemented, it would be harsh.  That said, I've known the HGS folks (at least most of them) for years and I would think they would be reasonable.

I understand where they are coming from because while someone is waiting for a permit to acquire, the firearm takes up space.  Which he may be maxed out or near capacity which would prevent him from bringing in more inventory.  Also he might have to expand and pay more to store all the firearms awaiting a permit to acquire.  Who knows.

It's up to you to buy form HGS or not.  If you don't like their policy, then shop else where with another LGS who has a less cost per gun policy.

Ask HGS about it. Theres another LGS with similar policy but they are leniant about it. Could also be that I have spent a buttload of money there too.  ;)

They don't get my business with those kinds of policies in place.  There's already too many hoops to jump through with HPD.

Paying for storage isn't unique to HGS, but you should talk to them about your specific circumstances.  They are not charging for the first 2 months to allow you to get your permit.  If you have an appointment that's further out than that, show them a screenshot of your appointment confirmation.  As long as they see you aren't leaving the gun indefinitely, you have a good chance of talking them into waiving storage fees until the day you get your permit.

If you don't have a permit appointment, and you are trying to get that gun while it's on sale, you need to weigh the discounted price against any storage fees you might be charged.  You could be saving money by getting the permit appointment first and THEN shop for/buy the gun so you avoid any fees.

Sometimes I wish they all did lay-away, so I can buy it at the promotional sale price for a % down payment, and then pay the balance in equal installments over a few months.  That would help my cash flow situation as well as provide time for the permit appointment to roll around.

It costs stores money to provide secure storage space, including insurance and labor for record keeping.

These guys are in business to make money.  If they provide storage, expecting to be compensated is reasonable.

OGC instituted a fixed storage fee of $32 per month if your firearm isn't picked up within 90 days.  It's under their FFL transfer instructions, so I'm unsure if it also applies to purchases from them.  I know transfers often cost them more than they charge, so if they aren't making money on the sale, storage fees are reasonable.

Carter said due to the current situation, the storage fee is being waived if you're waiting on a permit appointment.
