When shooting for groups with an air rifle, have experimented with thumb wrapped and not.  Accuacy was maybe lightly better unwrapped.   Likely due to involuntary clenching when squeezing off the shot.

With a tactical environment, absolute control of your weapon is paramount.  You are not shooting for group size.  Simply try not to milk the grip.

not familiar with that topic.
I did see Travis Haley adopt a similar position in a video somewhere. I tried that grip and it doesn't feel natural.

Air rifle.

This is what is called the "artillery hold" with air rifles.  Allows he gun to move as it wants to.  Helps with shot to shot consistency.  Firm grip with powerful spring guns does not work well for most shooters.   Too hard to consistently hold the exact same. The powerful spring decompressing produces all sorts of vibrations that affect the shot.

Tangerine with max fire rate allowed by KHSC at 50yrds with red dot.  Got bored after the first 2 shots.

Jabone is pistol red dot rapid fire at 7yrds ish.

I seen older gentelmen with white hair shoot like that with 20 inch ar15s at kokohead. They had silver barrels like those national match rifles. Using only irons.

This is the first time I've seen it done like that.  It looks very secure and stable.  5 points of contact plants the rifle to prevent the gun from moving in any direction while the support hand does fine adjustments.  Firing side thumb would be redundant.

I could see it being used for precision shooting behind a low wall or with tall grass and low obstacles ahead.
