Hey there!

My name is James.  I work at HFD and am a former Marine.  A good majority of my firearm training was back when we still had to polish boots.  I managed to shoot Rifle Expert my entire Marine Corps career, but couldn't hit the broadside of Diamond Head if you asked me to with a pistol.  I've been slowly getting back into shooting, and want to update my techniques and improve my damn pistol accuracy.

Shoots!

Welcome.
Too bad you just missed my open invitation to basic pistol marksmanship last week.

Aloha,

My name is also James, but different than the last poster. I wouldn't consider guns a hobby, but do believe in the 2A and in owning for personal home defense and because just the existence of many owners keeps the government in check. I don't shoot, but am willing to begin going to the range - I just see it as a 'hassle' all the way over there at Koko Head and having to learn its 'culture' over there, so never bothered.
I'm thinking of getting into it though, is why I joined this forum.
I am a retired 20yr Army grunt (Ranger, Airborne, Infantry) so I'm used to guns, and yours won't impress me, but not because I know-it-all, just because I wouldn't consider myself a 'gun nut'  and don't memorize things like how many grains this or that bullet is, for example. Don't care to know, and wouldn't be able to conduct a conversation about guns over a beer. Don't care. I fired the heck out of service weapons in my time, not in service anymore so don't shoot much. I do own a couple guns today, but it's not my whole life.
Still, I heart 2A and want to own more.
Hello, everyone!

I have a pistol practice coming up tomorrow if you want some coaching and we do the Puuloa rifle practices and matches too.

Hello, everyone!

Hi James.  I'm a retired servicemember and I still do a lot of shooting with other service members.    Koko Head is a far drive for most of us, however I don't see it as a hassle.  Just go with someone or a group to learn the range procedures and safety rules.  It's not a big deal and somewhat similar rules to a military range.

Thanks, I think I will do that! (eventually...)

Howzit, 2aHI,

I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to the 2aHI community. The family left Mililani shortly after my father decided to retire. We landed in Dallas, TX and I've lived there for the last decade. The opportunity in our careers were presented that would allow us to move back, and my bride and I jumped at the chance. You cannot help but be immersed into gun culture in Texas. All one has to do is drink the water and <poof!> your wallet is significantly lighter and you own a small (but nice) arsenal. Givin all the political circus activies in IL, CO, CT and CA, needless to say I was glad to find this forum with similarly enthusiastic individuals in HI.

I have a love for iconic/significant military firearms. In addition to smoking barrels I'm also love southern style BBQ and the slow-and-low smoking of meat (heh).

Welcome to 2AHI donelle and pewpew.

Is this a coincidence that y'all are both from Texas?

It is funny to me that 2 of my good friends just moved TO Texas to get away from the high cost of living and liberal politicians here.

I noticed that to, ha!

Texas is a very interesting place. There's a lot of similarites to HI regarding levels of state/peoples pride. Maybe it stems back to also once being autonomous? Who knows... Like HI, TX is a huge melting pot of cultures: Latin American, Germanic, Czech, Cajun/Creole,  Viet, Korean...which makes the food amazing. There's also a significant Polynesian presence. Euless, TX (suburb of Dallas/Ft.Worth) has a signficant enough Tongan and Samoan population that the high school football team does a haka before games. There was a lot to love, and a lot to hate. It's good to be back on this rock.

Aloha All,

Things have sure changed since I got into guns in the 70's in Hawaii. Gave them up in the 80's due to changes in interest. Well we moved to California for work a few years back and now I find myself back in the fray. There's a good chance that I may find myself moving back to the islands in a year so I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row. What to sell off, what to bring back, what's it gonna take to own/buy guns back home. It's a funny thing. Here in Cali we have lots of places to shoot but too many restrictions on what you can buy. In Hawaii you can pretty much buy anything you want but there doesn't seem to be a lot of places to shoot besides Koko Head. But these are topics for other posts. Anyway looking forward to coming home one day.  :shaka:

Welcome.  I think anything allowed in California should be allowed here, but you can check the laws here to make sure:  http://honolulupd.org/information/index.php?page=gunmain.  You would have to bring down all of your guns to the main police department on Beretania St and register them in 72hrs, which requires a $42 payment in cash.

Besides Koko Head, there is the new indoor X-Ring Security range and the older Honolulu Firearms indoor range.  There's the Puuloa and Schofield ranges for military, and sometimes I'll sponsor some people on to shoot.  You can checkout my shooting calendar of events on Oahu at https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=24268.0 to see whats going on.

Mahalo! Even though it's still a way off I will certainly be looking to hook up with local enthusiasts. I have a few pieces that are "off roster" here in CA that I may give others here in CA a chance to own as I could replace them when I get back home. If anyone thinks Hawaii is anti-2a trust me CA is a lot crazier.

Hey...  How many Maui people on here?  Grew up in Alaska, got tired of winter and moved here about 10 years ago.  Brought my guns with me but didn't get around to shooting again until last year.  9 years off was a long time but I have the bug again.
