Correct. Unless the unit is your place of sojourn. YT has lots of vids of people who live out of a storage unit.
It could also be your place of business. Lots of businesses operate out of storage facilities.
We have a lot of military families who put their household goods in storage and don't keep a house or apartment while deployed. Sometimes even the member's family moves in with friends or other relatives, because they can't afford to pay Hawaii rent to keep an apartment or house. Just too damned expensive for may enlisted with a spouse and children.
Once the deployment ends, they will probably get orders to leave Hawaii anyway. They can then have the military pickup the household goods at the storage facility to move to wherever the member is going.
If I recall, a lot of military enlisted were being screwed out of their Hawaii housing allowance because they were being domiciled on a ship or deployed lodging. During deployment, COLA was not being paid, which was why many families had no choice but to leave the islands, too.
I may have the details wrong about the housing allowance, but the result was families being forced to leave when the members deployed.
Anyway, for a deployed military man or woman, leaving their guns in storage may have been their only real option. The way Hawaii laws are, leaving handguns with a friend or relative would require a PTA and registration change -- assuming you can find someone you trust AND who is willing to store your firearms in their home indefinitely.
