Goodbye Love's Bakery (sniff)

Love's Bakery is closing down and they blame the pandemic for taking them under.  So sad.  :(

Love's was part of my life like forever.  Grew up on Love's products.

As a kid the sugar donuts and the other brown one with the coconut toppings were my favorite.  Also the apple pie!

Their staple pullman and king size white bread in their iconic red wrappings provided countless tuna, egg, and bologna sandwiches in my youth.

And now as an old fut, I look forward weekly to buying my allotment of their Hawaiian Hearth Honey Oat Bran bread.  Yeah, the doctor recommends the wood chip type breads now.  This one is my favorite.

Bye bye, Loves Bakery.  With your demise and the way other iconic companies are folding, it seems my turn is somewhere on the horizon too.  Which is ok.  I've had a good decent life.

It's just sad.  And cannot help thinking if the state's cowardly leadership acted differently, maybe Love's Bakery would have had a chance to keep going.

A lot of their income is from hotels and restaurants.
What happens when they resume?
Very sad.

The one and only time I took the Superferry to Maui, the Loves delivery truck on board was a good sight.

There are a few bakeries large enough to take up some of the slack like La Tour.
Some restaurants will make their own bread too I suppose though it might be frozen dough like Subway.
Hopefully some small bakery businesses will get a boost from the void.

When I was working at HA cargo 40 years ago, we shipped thousands of Loves and Holsum products from Oahu to the outer islands  6 nights a week. Whatever happened to Holsum? I think a bug mainland bakery may buy the Loves facility and pick up the void.

More than likey this will be the case. They have all the machines and business partnerships/contracts already built, so it would be a good investment for a mainland company to take over. But will all things..  time will tell.

I too loved the white donuts. Maybe they went bankrupt cause they stopped making these  :grrr: lol jk jk

So HNN said this morning that Love's Bakery products will still be on the shelves after the local bakery shuts down today.

The company made a deal with Franz Bakery located on the West Coast.  I guess they bought out Loves and will retain the name.

Sort of like how the local people still patronize Longs because they were so comfortable doing business and associate with the name.  Even though it was bought out by CVS.

Yesterday some guy on HNN news mentioned that he was going to miss the Loves sweet bread hot dog buns.
Those were a little known secret. I did not see them in any retail store.
I was getting them from their outlet store in Waipahu.
Those buns with a Redondos Hawaiian Winner was my favorite dog.

A long time ago when I was only like 16 or so I was a part time bagger/grocery helper at Foodland.  And in the morning the breadmen would come from Holsum and Loves.

They would check in their racks of bread and I would watch them before I clocked in to work and talk story with them as they filled the shelves.

I remember especially the Loves bread, the pullman and king size bread with their iconic red wrappings were sooo soft to the touch.  And they were still warm from the ovens.

The insides of the wrappings had a bit condensation and the bread man would scold me when I tried to help him.  He said don't double stack the bread because it is too fresh and you will smash it.

"And stop grabbing them so hard, gunfunnit....handle gently..." he would say.  :grrr:

I never thought of it but I bet at that time he wished I would go away.......

Franz bakery said that although the wrappers will be the same the bread, buns, rolls etc will not.  :wtf:
