Something about this building falling smells.  It broke from top to bottom.  Which is unusual for just 1 portion of a bldg.

The majority of residents are of middle eastern decent.  But with recent tensions between Israel and Palestine again,  I wouldn't be surprised if it was mainly Jewish occupancy.

Had 1 HI HPU grad die in the rubble. He planned a trip back to HI on July 11th per his family.

There were what appeared to be some serious foundation issues. Water in basement, exposed rebar and cracked concrete. I'm not a structural engineer but there are some indicators of that.

There were also a bunch of poorly performed band-aid repairs to the issues that all failed.  You can rehab bad concrete structures with additions of engineered carbon fiber applied with epoxy. Its done quite often now, I know more than one hotel in Waikiki, some condos on Kauai, and a local private school who have  all had that kind of work done to save their buildings.

I think it will turn out that the HOA refused to fund legitimate fixes to the known problems, its damn expensive.

My uncle has been emailing both of us with all sorts of questions.  I guess I should take a look.  I only read what their email exchange has been.  They mentioned something about a huge settlement or something like residents needing to shell out $80k each for the repairs.  Yikes!

It was an article that also had the pool inspectors verbal interview. 1 bedroom units need to pay $80K. 3 bedroom need to pay $300K.  They did settle on a 15 year finance thru their maintenance fees. Had 1 guy pay the lump sum. IDK if he will get his money back or not.

Their repair budget also had stuff not related to repairs alone. Like $700K to update the lobby area. So that portion had residents pissed. 

Here comes the kicker, will the board be held negligent or even taken to court due to their slow actions from 2018 to present?  This is why I will never sit on a board or any like seating.  Locally will the Marco Polo Condo board be taken to court due to voting no on installing sprinklers before the fire.  Most AOAO boards do have a directors and officers liability policy, but usually they buy $1,000,000 worth. Which in FL case and Marco Polo if negligence is found, won't be enough.  Then even if they win in court, the headache of going thru years of stress all for an unpaid board position on an AOAO.

Insurance stuff can be quite 

Back when I was more of a "real" engineer and actually did design, heard of many insurance folks going around to condo's to look around.  Then hit up the residents with "issues that they found" and that they could get them $$$.  They knew that many times, the A/E companies would settle instead of go through the headache.  My company fought a few.  Yeah, it was a damn headache. 

There's a fine line between design flaw and poor maintenance.  One is well documented for lawyers to scour for fault, one isn't really documented well.  JMHO. . .
