IMO, I don't view the Taliban as zealous idiots, or at least all of them.  There are multiple levels why they are dangerous.  Won't get into details in this thread, but it anyone thinks them not dangerous because they are perceived at zealots, well, I think history has already proven that many times over. . . but that's a discussion for another thread.

Good thing someone here isn't in charge of planning a war, they would under estimate the enemy and get worked.

We went to war with the Taliban, wasted over a trillion dollars and ended up with nothing.   They are a waste of time.  Can the taliban nuke us?  Do they have planes to bomb us?  Ships?  No

China has all of those and an actual functioning army.  They are dominated by a dictator so they are organized.  Not a rag tag bunch of militants and warlords.  Are the taliban a zero threat?  No.  Are they worse than China?  No.  Will covid and the anti vaxx idiots lead to more deaths than them?  Yes.  All the people the taliban killed over the last 30+ years doesn't come close to covid.

Or how can talk so confidently about the subject.  I don't know all of the issues, but I can confidently say that at least one here is missing the point. It's not all about nukes. . .

lots of omissions in this thread  Last statement was definitely a half-baked nightly build. Very unstable release. Dont download. An elementary explanation from a fourth grade left-behind.

Taliban yes, China no.   Taliban are useless religious zealots.  Bunch of idiots. China however is the number one enemy.  They can kill us all.

The US spent 20 years worth of blood and treasure -- treasure we didn't even have to spend -- and left Afghanistan running with our tails tucked in the worst mobilization I've seen in my lifetime.  We left millions, perhaps billions, of dollars worth of war fighting equipment for the Taliban to use.  We failed to ensure the Afghan Security Forces would & could protect themselves without us.

Who are the idiots?

Your opinions concerning international issues have been on par with your daddy, Biden:  wrong about everything.

Will be interesting if the Taliban can maintain all of those equipment.  And if they can, and do so with what supplies they have on hand and without specialized training, will be  :o

IMO, of course.   ;D

From the numbers of weapons I saw, they have plenty of spare units and parts.

As far as training, didn't we go after the Taliban in the first place because they were providing facilities, support and training to the 9/11 terrorists -- including Osama Bin Laden?

Plus, we did provide training to the Afghan forces.  I'd bet Omni's paycheck a significant number of those trained individuals will be in the Taliban's ranks ready to share what they know.

I was more making light (say 50% joking, 50% serious) of how poor we, as Americans, can be at maintaining what we build, use, etc.  That if they can make it work, without the significant backing that Americans would, would be interesting.  If we ever hear about that is. . .

Oh.  More complicated than I was gathering.

I have to imagine that the Taliban are used to a life of scarcity, and that such weapons not only represent offensive capability, but also the means to defend themselves, too.  Not to mention, the trade value would be nice.  Can get that ox and goat you were saving for!  ;)

I don't think rust is as big a problem as it is here (duh!).  Plus, I would think we left all kinds of supplies there -- much of which has to be for weapons cleaning and lube.  If they run out, any machinery cleaner and engine oil would suffice.

The most humorous thing I can imagine would be complaints surfacing that the US M4s don't function as well or last as long as the Russian military's AK47s they left behind!!   :geekdanc:

p.s. Ever wonder how masochistic the jerk was who thought up the word "lisp"?

Didn't mean for it to be complicated.  But "life of scarcity" and a basic "need" to make what they have work is really amazing.  I'm into histories of war/conflict.  Mostly with WWI, but to a certain extent with Afganistan (think Russians) and Vietnam.  That they can make AKs out of pretty much hand tools is  :o

So is your statement that the Taliban will cause more casualties than covid in the coming years?  Or have the potential to?

They can afford to bring in people to teach them PMCS.  It only took them 4 days to have someone fly the choppers, prior to it was basically driving them on the road like a car.

If 1 thinks that they won't be able to get and keep them working, are under estimating the enemy.  But also I don't assume keeping them in good condition by US military standards, but good enough where they don't explode upon take off.  Might crash later though.

Saw a vid of a marine with a pick axe bashing windows (bullet resistant).  Would have been way easier to park the vehicle away from people and toss a grenade in.

One of my buddies is an aircraft maintainer.  The process and supply chain they have needs it's own management system!

Taliban standards, use donkey to carry Jesus bolt and like parts. Problem solved.

I wonder if instead they would auction off the equipment to other organizations/countries that are not part of NATO.

If they have the money (oil), they can find someone to supply anything they lack.
