I have been following the Peak Oil thing since 2008. Did not think anyone else here would be into it because basically it means the end of industrial civilization and that is something most people are not ready to face. Like Boomer mass-suicide not ready.

Next year is really going to suck for Hawaii. Get ready for $8 a gallon of gas or more, plus everything else will be way more expensive and no tourists when plane tickets cost $3000 for coach.
I’m becoming clinically undepressed and thinking about beginning it all.

I'm not prescient, but I believe that prices will get to the point you mention, very soon.

I'm willing to go back to horseback, mules, and donkeys
(horses are common in Hawaii county), sailing ships( I apprenticed as a shipwright in my youth), I'm pretty sure
I can survive on local farms and foods I produce, however I suspect the majority of Democrats in Hawaii  will not be so well
off.
Fewer Democrats in Hawaii will be a good thing.

Makes you miss Linda Lingle, she suspended the state fuel tax and balanced the budget by holding back tax refunds for 6 months when the economy was turning to sh*t. The current city and state are going to have to tax the hell out of everything to pay for the 18 month paid COVID  vacation they gave all the workers. Also they are going to have a smaller revenue base to tax since they killed so many businesses with forced shutdowns.

Enjoy your Top Ramen.

She made so many cuts that it really messed up staffing.  There's a huge age gap from those times.

More detailed answers I was too young to first hand experience.   But I do see the effects.

Uh, that happens with the regular cycles of economic ups and downs. Happened before I got out of college and the “huge age gap” was there and a big reason I moved home. It will happen again. Tide changes like that happen all over the world on a regular basis where things go in cycles of void and filling of voids. That you think you’re seeing something special or going through something unique is laughable and just proves how ignorant you are.

Oh yeah. And FIge is doing a hellova job

If someone is to blame, blame the government workers' union.  They negotiated contracts that increased pay and benefits.  But, in order to afford the increases, positions had to be cut.

CONGRATULATIONS!  Your union managed to get a 10% increase in salaries and totally free healthcare in the new contract.  The bad news is 20% of the workers will be filling for unemployment.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Lingle did sign the bill about no gun confiscation during a state of emergency.

The “age gaps”, at least in my career field has already gone through two cycles, and seemingly going through a third. One of those cycles the up swing was pretty long when I became “manager level”, which resulted in a band of workforce that always found “everything is easy”. Those folks usually get weeded out by a down cycle, even short ones, but the longer up cycle allowed them to stay. Then the next downturn (hint, didn’t have anything to to do what Lingle), they learned the harsh realities.

Anyways, someone here totally missed the point of the OP.

Last I knew she was still hot, she married a stunt man and became a stunt woman when rolls dried up. I remember seeing her on a straight to DVD Steven Segal movie playing the main villan. She has solid stunt chops.

Not many people seem to recall how terrible 2008 was for our state. Linda Lingle had it land in her lap right at the end of her career, and it was a real predicament especially when Hawaii's involvement in the grand economic pyramid scheme threatened to push us into insolvency. How much fun were those furlough Fridays, long lines at the DMV, and slow tourism years when a lot of small businesses folded and kicked off the mass exodus to Las Vegas?

Our state was saved from default by the federal government bailing out the big financial institutions, and as a result the whole world is now facing a crisis twice as bad as before.

When there is no money to hire state workers (or when the money is worthless) it does not matter how strong your union is.
