Still not reading past the headline, even Musk said PW2 'might' be able to meet a households total needs under optimum PV conditions. you are not putting up that kind of system in the city limits, ESPECIALLY in Hawaii, you need a buttload of land to set up enough sq ft of panels. You probably have enough space in Lala land.  Even Musks PV Roof Tile system doesnt have enough output to go to ZERO grid no matter how many PWs you install.

Its easy to install more panels. Just buy the property next door.

simple thing to do. Go read your electric bill. Figure out how much you consume daily add some headroom. Figure out how much kw you need to store. Figure out how much panels you need to charge those batts. Factor in days of less sunshine. Go buy panels and batts for offgrid. Id factor in a generator when a hurricane smashes all that glass and panels are inop for ???.  Dont forget to factor in the power requirements of your EV as well.

I know folks who have had panels go bad in a couple years, they were warrantied and replaced but I doubt the claim of 20 yrs is realistic, especially in the Hawaii sun that kills 25 yr auto paint in 10.

From the bigger perspective, the dumb or naive people are making the same people they scream at the sky against - rich. Simple calculations and simple reasoning will show that it is not feasible without some support from existing energy production systems.

Im going to virtue signal because some people just dont get it. I have an ebike, hybrid and PV. Did I get it to save the planet? Nope. I got all this crap because I wanted to save time and money. (tax credits) and because I tinker with stuff I salvage.
I dont see the people championing e tech making e-choices. They are just salesmen. And these people parroting these unicorn ideas have no clue about how things actually work.

that was my earlier point, IF there were an 'off the grid -  all your electricity free from the from the sky' system EVERY house would have it installed a decade ago. PV was invented in the 1950s this isnt some new miracle tech, it hasnt made quantum breakthrough in the past 5 yrs, just like batteries it has just been inching forward slowly for a long ass time, it isnt gonna 'save the planet' anytime soon.

Hey if you willing to donate I'll buy a house and car and make sure it's all electric and off grid.

I've never said everyone should go off grid.  Stepping stones.

And don't need to pretend that gas solves everything you can have shortages of gas in a disaster too.

is that last sentence English?

Tesla's Failed Solar Roof Rollout

Bloomberg's Dana Hull published a piece on Wednesday morning aptly titled "Tesla’s Solar Roof Rollout Is a Bust — And a Fixation for Elon Musk". The piece notes that Musk has recently become "intensely focused on Tesla’s Solar Roof", despite it just being a small part of Tesla's business.

“It needs to be beautiful, affordable and seamlessly integrated,” Musk said about the company's solar roof shingle back in 2016. “You’ll want to call your neighbors over and say, ‘check out this sweet roof.’”

It's a half decade later and the company has barely rolled out any solar roofs, struggling to hit 200 installations per week. This is despite the fact that Musk set a goal to install more than 1,000 of them a week back in 2019. It raised prices in April of this year, leading to a slew of cancellations, Hull notes.

"The company is coming to grips with how vastly different it is to fine-tune roof projects than to fix issues on an automobile assembly line" - perhaps something they should have taken into consideration before pitching the idea to its shareholders and potential future investors all the way back in 2016.

Mohammed Abdalla, the CEO of Good Faith Energy, another Tesla-certified installer, said: “The Solar Roof is not an easy product to install, it’s not a cheap product, and it’s going to take a lot of time to dial it in and bring the cost down.”

I t hink he also discontinued the wall battery as well.  So Omni is out of luck.

And who knows when the CyberTruck will actually be released. Guess he isn't going to be as green as he thinks for a while.

About 2 years ago I was in Vegas and there was a commercial for a battery pack.  It mentioned it gives hours of power during a blackout at the cost of $3500 just for the unit, no installation or what ever upgrades is needed.

Or be like the folks in my building.  They "fight" to get the parking stall next to a power outlet. . .

Folks who live in the sticks on the mainland drop about $7-10K for a natgas generator and a big propane tank so they have backup power that can last them a week  when winter storms drop power lines. A couple hrs of juice from a battery isn't going to keep you alive when you are snowed in for days.

Doesn't matter because Omni doesn't have to do this.  So it doesn't affect him and is OK.

around here, it seems well-off (rich) people drive Tesla's.

po' people drive 20yr-or-older (gas) clunkers.

makes it an elitist thing.

although I do see some definitely not-rich people driving $50K+ pickup trucks, lifted of course, with bling wheels.  their car payments must be whoppa-doozie.   ???

Tesla is coming out with a cheaper a model about $20K's.  But who knows when really.  Planned ETA is in 2022, but cybertruck has been delayed for 3 years now.

There are lots of people here who bought homes and use their equity to buy nice vehicles -- either selling the house/condo or getting another mortgage.

Many homes have multigenerational families, and if most of the adults work, the mortgage payments are manageable.
