He was about to be extradited from Spain to the US for Tax Evasion charges equalling 30 yrs in prison.

If you watched the Showtime documentary about him and his shenanigans in Belize you'd probably be skeptical and want to see the body. He is / was a very colorful character with an enormous love of hammocks and the women who sit in them.

So either he had reason to think someone might make it look like he killed himself.... or he was going to kill himself and wanted it to look like someone killed him...
