National Dog Photography Day

Cozmo at almost 2 months when we brought him home:

Cozmo is a cute little guy. How old is he now and how big is he?
====
My Jasper was about 2 years old when he just showed up at my house.
He was full of ticks and had a broken rope around his neck.
We fed him and cleaned him up.
Walked him all around the neighborhood searching for the previous owner.
Took him to the pet hospital to check for a chip.
Took him to the Humane Society and dropped him off.
The next day HHS asked me if I wanted to adopt him.
I said OK. That was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life.

Cozmo sadly departed this existence the month the pandemic began.  Half blessing, since his hips no longer supported his 90 lb body and he was unable to do his outdoor business outside.  Just one of many genetic problems his breed has been cursed with from inbreeding.

I had his hips X-Rayed when he turned 1 yr old to make sure he was healthy enough to breed.  After the vet showed me his films, I scheduled an appointment to have him fixed.  The end of the bones sitting in the sockets were only about half as big as the cavities they occupied.  Looked like matchsticks inside a soda can,

I'm actually grateful his hips held out until after he was 13.  The vet said he'd probably lose mobility at about 5 with the condition she saw.

Aww that's sad about Cozmo.

I give jasper a hip and joint supplement.
I also try to limit his food intake to keep his weight down.

It doesn't work for me but maybe it'll work for him.

For about 4 years, I had him on prescription Tramadol for the pain, and Glucosamine tablets for the joints probably starting about age 5 or 6.  It was a nightly ritual.  He also had ear infections that flared up on occasion.  I switched vets after the old one refused to refill his ear med unless I brought him in for an exam.  Vets cost as much as (or more than) regular people doctors now -- so much so that they are selling pet insurance for medical care!  I guess vets need a steady income stream, too.

Cozmo loved to take walks, but wound up letting me lead about halfway back to the house.  We'd stop and rest a bit when he decided the pain was outpacing the thrill of being out.

I was able to keep his weight a steady 88 lbs +/- 2 lbs each time the vet weighed him.

My son lives in Tomah, WI. We did the Minnesota side. It's the old fur trade route, stretches very long between the Canadian and US border.

Catching up with chicken wing friday today.

But today is Hawaiian Flag Day. Funny that it has the British union jack on it, huh?
Some modern Hawaiians would prefer the Jawaiian green and yellow pakalolo flag, yeah?

It's also National MUTT DAY.

It's also International Lifeguard Day...
my first cousin was a lifeguard at Waikiki in the 70's but he passed away. >:(

It's also Avocado Day
(overdosed on those things when I was a small kid because everybody had a tree)

Lots of reasons to celebrate today.
