Mandate vs. Requirement
« on: July 29, 2021, 08:15:13 AM »
I'm interested in your input on the government's recent "requirement" of masks in federal buildings, offices, etc.

They were very careful not to say "mandate".

Either way they are telling you what you must do in these places.  So why are they putting lipstick on a pig?

Either way they're forcing you to do something you might not want to do.

My guess is "mandate" has legal consequences whereas "required" is not.  Am I correct?

Pelosi orders Capitol Police to arrest staff and visitors who fail to comply with the new mask mandate for vaccinated individuals. Members asked to be reported to SAA in case of failure to comply.

Interestingly the enforcement bulletin specifically says that members of Congress shouldnt be arrested, just reported to the Sgt at Arms.

Rules exist for any building/office/land.  This is nothing new.  Similar to the required to wear shoes/shirt.  No bringing firearms into federal buildings and hundreds of other rules.

Social engineering has also been defined as "any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interests."

Social engineering has also been defined as "any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interests."

That definition sounds more like "Peer Pressure."

When hacking was "growing up,"  Social Engineering was the number one method of breaking into computer systems, getting free phone service, or even stealing money from Western Union locations.  If you've ever called up a company and pretended to be someone else in order to get the person on the phone to do something for you that they would never do for a regular person (someone who is not a company insider or working with an insider), then you've engaged in social engineering.

One actual example would be to call a company using an internal phone directory.  You tell the person you were told by their boss (you have their name in the directory) that the person you're speaking to could help you.  Then you ask questions that get more info/names/numbers.  At some point, you really sound like an insider who knows people.  It doesn't take much more than that to Social Engineer someone into giving out private info such as employee addresses, computer passwords or security procedures.

Any definition that includes "may or may not" is not really defining much!   :geekdanc:

"Subject Matter Expert (SME):  Someone who may or may not be considered an expert in a given topic or skillset."

"Either way they're forcing you to do something you might not want to do."

Then let's look at "mandate" versus "requirement."

QUIETShooter basically had it right in essence.

A mandate is "an official or authoritative command; an order or injunction; a commission; a judicial precept."

A requirement is "a necessity or prerequisite; something required or obligatory. Something asked."

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

Comes down to having a choice and seems we're being forced into decisions. It might come down to them taking away that right to choose. OG complains about his tax dollars but doesn't consider the bigger picture.

His "big picture" involves everyone and everything orbiting him.  Nothing matters unless it affects how he lives his life.

That's how it should be for everyone.  If it doesn't affect you, don't care about it.  If it does, do.  Abortion or who marries who doesn't effect me so I have 0 say to regulate it.  Its not my place.  Covid does so everyone has to follow certain guidelines because everyone (the majority) has a say (government).

This philosophy works wonders for freedom and applies to countless things.

Not everyone is as selfish as you are.  A women I don't know getting raped doesn't affect me.  She should not have to go thru that.  And she should have the best tool to defend herself against a rapist (CCW).  I've commented on multiple social media post and used this exact example why as 1 reason CCW should be allowed in HI.
