Innocent Man Held Over Two Years in Mental Institution
for Denying He Was Someone Else

Always trust the government ... even when they tell you you're someone you're not!

If you deny being the person the gov't says you are, you will be labeled crazy, locked up and given drugs to "help" you.

HNN broke this story last week.
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2021/08/04/man-forced-remain-hawaii-state-hospital-more-than-2-years-because-mistaken-identity/

HPD dropped the ball on this case.
But.....

On the plus side, the homeless guy got free room and board for 3 years.
The sister is eyeballing a fat lawsuit so NOW she wants to take in her homeless brother ....He'll be her cash cow.
The dude is better off now than he would have been otherwise. He's not living on the street any more.
Sounds like a win for everybody except us taxpayers.

This guy got lost in the bumbling bureaucracy that is the good 'ol Hawaii government.

The good 'ol "left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing".

The good 'ol paper pushing, sitting at their desk doing their nails and wondering what to eat for lunch bureaucracy that is sadly rampant in all departments of the biggest employer of Hawaii's people.

Bigger is better?  Yeah, right.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

I just thought of something. The story sounds too stupid to be true. What if it wasn't stupidity at all?
What if this was a conspiracy of compassion? This is just a theory, or a plot twist for a movie.

It seems like he was a nice guy. What if the social workers liked this guy and just wanted to get him off the street?
It seems a bit like a Hallmark movie story, but here in Hawaii I could see it happen.

It would make a great plot for a feel-good movie.

If you've spent 2 minutes in the Hawaii mental hospital, you'd know it's worse than most punishments you could inflict on anyone.

My Ex got a job there for about 3 months.  Rats everywhere, property overgrown with vegetation, buildings dilapidated and falling apart, every piece of furniture and equipment hand-me-downs from other state offices, and patients who can't be controlled when they have violent outbursts.

It took her being attacked and injured 3 times to quit -- and she was in administration!  Some of the patients were 3 times her size, so there's no chance she could fend off one when they decide to act up.

Many of the mentally ill are simply sent to jail where they get no treatment at all, but I'm not sure the environment is any worse in jail.

When the guy was misidentified as another man already in jail in Alaska, and the state of Hawaii, with all its resources, refused to even make the smallest effort to verify his identity, it highlights the reason you should never trust government.  No matter how many laws and "studies" they do, it's the low-level office worker who implements the policies.  If they do no more than what is required of them in their small part of the system, then the system will remain broken.

Hmm, easy $50K a year without any overhead? sounds like a real shot for someone to get the Electric Car they always wanted.

HNN is not known for their exhaustive fact finding. Wonder if there’s more to that story. Like said Judge’s name…. in the name of accountability of course.

....
Nowadays there always seems to be 2 sides to every story.
The internet has made it easy to publicize 2 sides in order to sway public opinion.
I notice that the truth usually lies in between the 2 sides.

In this case, the state has not presented any excuse yet.
Curious to know what kind of settlement will ultimately be reached.

Well, since they found it justifiable to lock the man up for almost 3 years and
keep him drugged up based on his "belief" that he was someone else,
maybe the same should be done to everyone who believed he was not who he really is.

He turned out to be right.  They were all wrong.  Give them the same treatment.

Not really one for (taxpayer funded) lawsuits but I hope he drags em all down.
2 years of unlawfully justified incarceration in a substandard facility being forced to take unwanted/unneeded drugs, surprised he didn't GO crazy.

Too bad he was not a HI firearms owner as Rap Back would have settled this quickly.
Oh, wait !
