Stevens 300 .22LR
« on: September 09, 2012, 12:13:56 PM »
One of my friends bought a Stevens 300 .22LR, I noticed that it is similiar to the Savage MKII .22LR rifle.  Everything is the same but he trigger, it also come with a scope, but I noticed there is no holes to mount scope rails.  Does he have to bring it to a gunsmith?

Looking at the Savage website, they claim that the Stevens 300 is drilled and tapped.  However, the pictures they have of the stock and scoped models don't actually show the top of the receiver.  And, for whatever reason, the manual for the Stevens 300 isn't listed for download.

I'd look REALLY closely at the top of the receiver.  Manufacturers often insert screws into the scope holes to keep crud out of them.  From the photos, there should be one hole just forward of the bolt, and another just over the chamber.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I just looked there are no screws or holes near the bolt and chamber.

I too was researching this same question for most likely the same person. I told him it should be drilled and tapped be he said there was no evidence of it being so could the scope rings clamp on possibly? Anyone have a Stevens 300 that came with a scope from savage that can post a picture?

Yessir, Im a coworker of his.  I tried to find pictures online of another stevens to show what these mounting holes should look like but I've found nothing but information stating it should have the same mounting holes as the savage MKII.

This picture shows where the rail sections should go but alas it isn't much help.

Are there any local gun smiths that are able to drill and tap the holes for the mounts?

So the scope is mounted with a Dovetail?

If so I believe there are adapters that can convert the dovetail to a rail, if that is what you wanted to do, however, with .22lr the dovetail should be just fine for the scope mount.

Nope, no dovetail.

I happen to have a mkii and mine has a total of 4 screws on top of reciever. 2 for rear picatinny and 2 for front picatinny that my scope mounts to. And I guess the question is yes it came like that. I know that doesn't help. But I can help with acquiring more magazines go to ebay for the 10 rounders and find the make offers deals I got 2 for like 32 bucks nib.

Ya my mark ii has holes as well. The lower end Stevens models do not. I'd like to order the mags from eBay as I only have 2. But since PayPal is so anti gun I won't.

Beggin' your pardon, but it doesn't even have grooves on top of the receiver for a clamp-on mount?

Yes the Stevens 300 does, mark ii does not. At least the FV doesn't.
