One of the easiest ways to get the garage door to open is wait for the resident to leave. Have a remote control toy truck -- something close to a foot tall +/- -- and drive it into the garage before the door closes. The truck will trip the safety sensor and make the door reverse direction. All newer garage door openers require such a safety sensor so kids, pets and even slow adults don't get injured by the door.
The downfall with newer openers from the thieve's perspective is many come with or can have an optional WiFi module installed. Mine tells me on a phone app when the door opens, closes, has stayed open for 5 minutes after opening (great if someone forgets to close it), re-opens because the sensor was tripped, and so on.
That works when the opener is engaged. If someone uses the manual pull rope, the opener won't report a thing.
Of course, that's what the WiFi camera in the garage is for.

If you can't manage a remote control toy, you can also try rolling a ball to trip the sensor, but then you may be visible trying to get close enough to beat the door coming down.
