Embedding in resin?

Anybody embed stuff in resin before?
Typically flowers and coins for paperweights.
I thought this would make a cool paperweight.
You could make up any kind of bs story to go along with it.

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away ....

I had something called a Paperweight Kit.  Basically a few different size and shape molds.  Just pour the resin into it, let it solidify, and remove it.

Whatever you want to encase needs to be suspended in the middle, so the thicker the resin, the easier to do that.  Sometimes you need fill a small amount in the bottom of the mold, let it cure for a short time, then add the object and rest of the resin.  If you aren't careful, you'll have the object off center or even close to protruding.

The molds are usually upside down when filling, so make sure the object is also.

Very simple process with a few gotchas.

It might be cool to look around for, or 3D Print, a mold that has a recessed image of a 1911.  You could also just include a small charm or toy 1911 in the resin with some separation between it and the phone for a 3D look.

Here's an example of a nightlight-making kit.  I did the Amazon ready-to-check-out, and didn't get the warning "Unable to ship to your address."

Might be fancier than you want, but you can find all kinds of kits -- or just get the resin and mold separately.

Cool. Definitely a lot of tutorials on youtube too if you wanted to try yourself. Probably the biggest difficulty I could see is making sure you get the bubbles out to get a nice clear casting.

Fiberglass Hawaiis team are knowledgeable and have high quality products. Newer/fresher resin is always better and sometimes the stuff on hardware store shelves has been sitting there for a while.
Stop blaming lazy people. We didn’t do anything.

One time I bought directly from them and they had a mislabeled one of the 2 parts, when I finished the project the resin never hardened and was rubbery. The staff were apologetic and compensated me well. Aside from that they were all very helpful in helping me getting the right items for my projects.

They do make a casting polyester resin and that has a shelf life where the regular epoxies generally can sit there fine for a long time.

Epoxy has a shelf life as well, and while it may still function the longer you wait to use it the more likely it will discolor.

The main advantage of FH is that you can save a lot of money by buying larger amounts, and they have all the professional mixing and finishing supplies there as well.

I mostly use them for surfboard repair and every time I go in I always pick up a handful of their plastic graduated cylinders. They make measuring stupid easy.

Saw a YT guy resign an egg. Then 1 year later opened it.  It stunk up the entire place and I think he threw up too. So don't resign a raw egg.  He also tried to resign an ice cube. Problem was that it floats. So he had to let the resin sit until it was able to hold the cube in place.

I usually fire my eggs before they have a chance to resign.

I’ve cast Centipedes, B-52 roaches and a dead lizard and a butterfly I found dead.
Lesson learned….dry out whatever you’re casting.
The resin creates heat, depending how hot a batch you make.
Lizard was just gross. It was fresh and smelled like boiling flesh.
Cockroach was fresh and it’s guts leaked all over the place inside the casting. Gross but kinda cool.
Got smart and dried out the centipedes and butterfly.
They came out alright. Kids could take them to school for show and tell.

But I’m no expert.
