OKAY, so. Since so many of you seem to be upset and have no idea how to get this done, I’ll help you out.
Don’t bitch about out of pocket cost - you’re not getting out of that and it is truly an investment info yourself and your personal rights. Take the hit like a man like the rest of us who needed the clearance. Time it right and you’ll have the signed copy letter in hand to take to HPD before you pick up your permit…
Dr. Tom Cook in Honolulu charges ~$300 without insurance for a firearm clearance exam. 10 minute online video call appt with choice to pick up original signed letter in office or get copy emailed to you. HPD accepts the copy, take to registration side and they’ll put it in your application package. Pick up permit on assigned day as long as you get the clearance letter in soon after package submission.
Also:
If you have a medicinal marijuana card, you cannot legally own or possess firearms, so you need to pick which is more important. Some people don’t know, so it’s important we all disburse them helpful info to whoever may need it.
I’d recommend calling and leaving a message asking for a firearm clearance exam appointment, and they’ll call or email you back and send you a packet of info (medical/ psychiatric history, personal info, etc) and fill it out and return via email. They’ll notify you by email or phone when they have an appointment open. You have to pay the exam fee prior to appointment, but that’s to be expected with no-insurance medical appointments. Very easy to do, very easy to give guidance on.
And no, Kaiser and the VA DO NOT do firearm clearances for whatever reason (probably legal/ political liabilities). So use this doctor or his associates and protect and take advantage of your rights. Not sure how long letter is valid for (I assume 1 year) as I have applied and gotten several permits from HPD with the same copy of the letter.
Good luck brothers and sisters and help yourself out.
