This is one of the salient facts disclosed in the article:

"For the second year in a row, armed private citizens killed more felony suspects (343) than police did (298) (FBI Data). In 2019, legally armed citizens fatally shot 359 criminals while police killed 355, according to the 2019 data published as part of the 2020 report."

This demonstrates the case for legally granting citizens the right to own and use firearms for justifiable self-defense. Still, we have 13,620 homicides by firearms in 2020, and there is no pie chart of those caused by (a) criminal assailants who illegally possessed a firearm, (b) criminals who legally possessed a firearm before the incident, and (c) unknown suspects. In other words, how many unsolved cases of murder are there among all firearm related killings? If the objective of gun control is to keep firearms out of the hands of "bad guys", then the numbers in category (a) and (b) are of paramount importance. A high proportion of unknown suspects would suggest improving police funding and resources. Here is some data from the end of 2020 hinting that open cases are a serious worry:

The problem has always been (IMO) both sides trying to use statistics to prove "guns good" or "guns bad."

We focus too much on "gun crimes" and "gun deaths" and not enough on crimes and deaths in general.

When you use terms that include "gun [something]", you've already decided what the stats will reveal -- that guns are the cause of "whichever position you take."

Our stats need to be about crimes and self defense in general.  The only gun-related stat I think makes sense is the comparison between successful self defense with and without a gun, no matter if the accused attacker was killed, wounded, or surrendered/fled.  That should demonstrate that self defense with a gun makes more sense if faced with the threat of violence.

Otherwise, we're going to continue posting the NEXT study that confirms what we know, and the gun haters will continue to find ways to refute the conclusions.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
