Moving firearms to Mainland
« on: December 03, 2021, 07:21:58 PM »
I'm moving the majority of my collection to the mainland firearm secure storage unit with Ward North American.

What do I need to with HPD?  Give them a spreadsheet of 25+ firearms?

I'd take the list there personally and ask for some form of receipt so you have proof you gave HPD proper notice.  You'll need some kind of proof if they decide to come after you for the fines.

Notice they give you a 5-day window to provide notice? That really makes it difficult for people moving while also dealing with shipping cars, packers, movers, temporary lodging, cleaning rentals, inspections, turning off utilities, etc, etc.  So many things to manage just on te Hawaii side at the last minute, not to mention all the things to do preparing for where you're heading.

There's no reason they couldn't provide a 30-day window with the expected date for the firearms to leave Hawaii.  I mean, you might have the firearms packed up with household goods and sitting in a warehouse for who knows how long before they actually leave the state.  Making this a 5-day window is ridiculous.

If it’s a permanent move and you don’t plan on coming back how the hell are they going to know but if it’s temp then I guess you gotta do it. One on my friends left permanently for Alaska and he told them nothing. He said phuck HPD…. Alaska will just laugh at HPD. ;)

My question is, how will HPD know you didn't move the guns BEFORE the law went into effect?  They aren't doing inspections, so without a requisite justification to search, they'll likely never know whether they are in Hawaii or on the Moon!  The only way they can tell is if you registered it after the law was in effect.

I sent a Pelican case of several handguns and an AR to the mainland when my daughter relocated.  This was done before the law was even a bill.

Are they going to come after everyone who no longer have their guns here and fine them?  Is everyone for the last few decades going to need to show proof as to when the guns left?

I bet they have some public servant IT Professional from a prestigious school running checks on people leaving the state and cross-checking for firearm registrations -- as a way to raise funds via civil fines.

This whole scheme stinks.  Name another piece of personal property that gets the owner fined if they don't tell the state it's being moved outside their jurisdiction.  Cars?  Boats?  Bicycles?  Anything else that's registered with the state?

Yet, if you don't register your firearm inside the 5 day window, there's no fine -- just a friendly reminder via an HPD phone call.  Its as if they think a gun leaving the state is more dangerous than an unregistered gun in the state.

North American movers cancelled my move this week.  Anyone know what other method or moving company can move my firearms?
