carpro trix or tarX- best and most recommended product. available at pakshak.com or at their physical location on sand island.
stoners tarminator- available at some select car care stores like checkers and carquest but i dont think napa has it.
3m wax and adhesive remover and dupont prep sol- multiple uses besides tar removal, available at body shop stores
automotive goo gone -walmart
mineral spirits and diesel both work but id be careful with it. if theres a color blend or complete respray youre in for a fun afternoon.
i choose the above in that descending order for any car worth more than 8-10k blue book. its worth it to spend a few bucks on a dedicated detailing product. they are all completely safe even for mediocre oem paint or resprayed panels. id stay away from wd-40 and goof off and lacquer thinner unless the paint is already badly neglected. they weaken the paints hardness and do other long term damage with repeated usage. chip foose is one of the main ones spreading wd-40s many uses, but most of them are temporary fixes that do more harm than good over the long run.
also stay away from bug and tar sponges they still create marring even with the slipperiest soap.
the key to tar removal is multiple applications and long dwell time. to do a test spot lightly rub a microfiber towel corner soaked in product of choice after presoaking the lowest part of the sideskirt so if it does damage you only need to repaint one removable plastic piece instead of the door too.
you want to wait until it melts into the towel instead of just smear it from side to side. thats why microfiber towel is important because of the extra surface area and absorption.
sorry for the long winded post, i do subcontract detailing and restorations for part of my living so i wanted to contribute to the forum where i can since i dont know much about firearms yet
