Hello folks.
I just installed Tapatalk so I could see what was going on.
Is anybody else troubled by the January 6 coincidence?

The forum software seems to be working as well as the database seems to not be corrupted. The issue is that we are getting blank pages served up to us in our browser by the web server. Tapatalk does not rely on the web server to show the pages. Which is why the forum seems to be working with Tapatalk and not from a browser.

There can be a myriad of issues causing this such as a missing or corrupted file. Software updates gone bad. Or software updates that are over due and need to be performed. I have even seen someone trying to use non standardized characters cause this issue. Also, the server farm where the server is located could have performed a restore of this account and botched it. There are numerous reasons this can happen. We need to wait and hear from the mods as to what the owner of the forum is going to do. If anything.

I have done a little digging and it appears the last time the forum software was updated was 2017. So the issue could be as simple as outdated and/or incompatible forum software with the web server software. The quick fix could be the forum software needs to be updated.

I don’t want to start conspiracy theories here either. But this version of forum software is vulnerable to injection attacks. A hacker could try this type of attack. But without the server logs we cannot know if this is what happened or not.

The short and most probable answer is that the forum software is out of date and probably just needs to be updated to fix this issue. Just in case this was an attack of some sort a quick restore from a recent backup would also fix this issue.

The bigger picture begs the question as to why it is not being fixed? In the past the owner of the forum has taken a week or so to respond to requests to fix forum issues. So my guess is this is why it has not been fixed yet. So for now all we can do is wait to see what the owner does, if anything.

On a good note, the lights are still on. Meaning the owner is still paying the web hosting account bill. The forum software is still functioning with Tapatalk which means the basic functions are still working.

A couple more issues for those who are more technical in nature might also be a memory allocation error where there is not enough memory allocated for the software to perform its job. This could occur as the forum gets larger and more memory is needed to be allocated. If the owner has not been keeping the forum up-to-date this could easily occur. It could be a simple configuration change.  Or the owner might have to pay for more memory to keep the forum rolling along.

Also a file permissions error. I have had web hosting companies do something to my account that changes some file permissions.

Was it Jan 6 when it stopped working? It’s PROBABLY just a coincidence, in this case. In any event, the focus should be on how to get it back working.

WHY DID IT STOP WORKING anyway?

Was this due to an upgrade of the forum software? Whether manual or an auto upgrade.

If not then it very likely was a HACK. And the Jan 6 thing becomes more suspicious.

This reminds me. I had previous been a participant of TWO discussion forums. Rather unique types. One was the American Preppers Network. Both suffered catastrophic failure and then the entire community just disappeared. There was no way for everyone to find each other again.

So, I suggest pronto we establish a backup community place. Maybe on Signal (what’s the group name) or Telegram or another gun website. Absolutely worst case maybe Reddit within a HI guns subsection.

PS - regarding the American Preppers Network, they were never able to restore all the original content and had to move to a new forum site, and it just was not the same again. They had to start with a blank database and just tried to occasionally upload the text of some of the old site which they had backups of, but not able to actually restore the backup.

The prevailing thought for the reason for it stop working is probably a server side software upgrade that is not backwards compatible with the last upgrade of the forum software from 2017.

In other words if the server side was upgraded and was not backwards compatible then someone had/has their head up their ass!

Many times the hosting site upgrades products like Apache webserver, PHP scripting interpreter, or MySql or MariaDB on their servers.  These programs affect all the sites hosted on the server.

Even though they send out notices to test your apps to be ready for the changes, many people ignore it until after the site stops working.

I don't know if that happened here, but it does happen often.

Another common thing is sites get migrated to new servers.  Sometimes permissions are changed on files, or restores don't run completely.

Could be any of a number of things.

I’m hoping that the owner comes back and fixes the issue. But more so I hope he allows administrative access to one of the mods so they can do more things like updating the forum software.

In the long term I think there might be a plan by someone to possibly build another site. It would mean that all the good data and discussions we have had in the past will no longer be available. But at least people could migrate over to the new site. This same thing happened to the AZ forum I belong to. Old members come back looking for the old site and when they cannot find it they eventually find the new site and register and become active members again.

This is not good news. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

What’s our contingency plan folks? We need to assume this site is not going to be fixed going forward, AND that it can stop working ANY TIME.

We need to take action ASAP while we can sorta still communicate with a subset of each other.

The other thing I suggest is we edit the titles of the posts to include USE TAPATALK APP in the front so people browsing from computers can at least see the hint when they look at the recently updated posts.
