Is Timmy Chang qualified ?
« on: January 23, 2022, 03:32:14 PM »
Seems premature for Timmy.
Hope June takes him under his wing. And introduces him to people.

Poll should say if he gets help from June Jones.

UH is the best place for 1st time Head Coach. Chow was given his shot as HC and  UH can pay them beans. Chow was making more as a QB coach at USC than HC for UH.

June Jones is of a caliber where even if he's interested in coaching at UH, if there is a disagreement, he can walk away no problem.  (and he did....)

UH needs him more that he needs UH.

Timmy Chang?

Whoever gave him the job at UH must have been drunk.  Or on drugs.

I hope it works out. I don’t think it’s going to work out, but I still hope it works out.

He does have some coaching experience as an assistant coach.  Give him a chance. He cannot be any worse than Fred Von Notting Happen. I worked at HA with his mother when she was hapai with him.

I will pay him minimum wage, not one penny mo'. All he gotta do is finish ahead of UNLV in their division, and I feel fine.
With his criminal record (Pearlridge), will he be able to buy a handgun in Honolulu?

Timmy Chang is still young and UH is a start for him to get experience at the helm of coaching.

The biggest challenge is like the other coaches before him, getting talented players to come play for UH.

Lot of talented players out there would rather play for a known college and a known coach to add to their potential professional careers.

Playing for a mediocre college and a relatively unproven coach will not be on their top list.

But playing for a renowned coach like June Jones might be worth it, even if the college is mediocre.

But too late.  June Jones walked.

Part of Jones art was finding cast aways with talent and helping them shine.
Colt Brennan, Davone Bess etc.
Recruiting is gonna be a bitch. Plenty open spots though with all the transfers.
This is a tough situation to throw a first time head coach into.
High School stadium doesn’t help.

Where's the options for:

Don't really care, but: Yes with help from June Jones
Don't really care, but: Hell yes. Remember Rolo

 ;D

Do I think he's qualified? No, but don't think the choice was about qualifications.  I also think that UH's handling of athletics is a joke and has been for a while.  Maybe since days after Bob Wagner.

I wonder why UH never offer the job back to Rich Miano after June Jones was out?
seemed like Miano was second in line after Jones

bottom line is the only statistic that matters, winning
if UH wins more than last season, Tim Chang is a good head coach.  (Heads!!!  :D )
if not, then he is a bad choice

bigger issue is UH Athletic dept. and the director. UH knew that Coach Todd Graham had a questionable past and coaching record, but UH hired him anyways
poor choices lead to UH athletics screw ups

and another thing:  if UH wants to sell more tickets at games, start selling beer and food.
why go to see a game if they only selling water?  I'd rather stay home and watch on tv.

They stopped selling?  Or only at TC Ching?  Back when we used to tailgate, Aiona was pushing for no alcohol in the game or tailgating.  Everyone was like, if they do, maybe like 1000-2000 people a game would show up.  If that.

Gotta also factor in that Chang is basically using the prior coaches team, or what's left of it. So for every new HC, I give them 3 years before coming down hard.  They need time to build their team.  So I'd be happy with 5 wins.

UH games used to have good food until they got greedy. Now the food vendors suck. No more Andagi kids going up and down the stands selling bags. I remember the 0-15 season, and this was before smart phones. So 1 had to sit there and watch. And my dad always stays till the end. Even if the score is a blow out.  During this season, I actually thought that Kahuku High would give them a run for their money if they ever played.

Why does UH suck, well like mentioned above, we don't get the best players. Basically the USC rejects. But a good coach can harnest what he has and work with it. Not like our divisions WAC or MW has been super hard anyways.  I worked with a sister of a player during the 15-0 season. When they got worked by Georgia at the bowl game, she said cause most of the players were hung over. They knew they wouldn't win, so partied the night before.  Same person said why Jason Rivers didn't do well in the NFL is because the entire time he was going thru major girl problems. Lost focus. Last I saw him he was working at Verizon in Pearl Ridge.

TC. IIRC they don't even serve soft drinks.

I don't think that was the reason why they lost.  SEC speed is almost pro level. UH never faced that kind of competition before.  Georgia had a bunch of 4 & 5 star players. 3 star players warm the bench.  UH had at best a couple 3 star and 2 star players on that team.  The rest 1 or no star players.

I’m pretty sure Jon Gruden is available.
