Travelling to California then onto Las Vegas
« on: February 11, 2022, 07:24:58 AM »
All

I have a Question.  In August i will be attending a "Meeting" in California (Work Related) for a few days, then onto Las Vegas for a week then head home.  Wanted to head to Gun Range while in Las Vegas.  I know its legal to transport the hand gun.  But as a "non resident", and "unlicensed" for California, is it "LEGAL" to have it in California?  I would keep in locked case as i cant use in California.

I do have a "plan b" but would rather have it with me.

Thanks in advance!

Aloha!

Plan A should be get a non-stop flight to Las Vegas, do not set foot in the people's republik of California.
With all the crowds loving LV trips from Hawaii so much, have to be regular non-stop flights.

Solves all worries.   Is how I am moving toys to Arizona.

The OP's understanding of the law in CA is probably correct according to this link.

https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel

However, will the hotel store your locked container in their safe, knowing that you have an unloaded gun in the container?

Since you are not travelling through the state, meaning it is your destination, then you are making another trip to leave the state, you are not protected by FOPA (Firearms Owner Protection Act).

If its on the CA roster you have no worries
https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search

You have 60 days in which to report and register "if you intend to move to CA"
https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/online-reporting#nr

If it's an AR, ship yours or rent one when you're there

Nobody does anything illegal.....

Thank you All that responded.  I guess no one did Plan A as far as travel goes.  Plan B is to leave my handgun in Vegas on a July trip with a Handgun person secured and retrieve in August.  I guess that solves that.  Definately will need a brain surgery if i ever consider moving to California (IM NOT)  MAHALO!

NV passed a law a few years ago that if you let someone "borrow" your gun, then they must complete a background check (NICS) at a FFL, just like how a private party sale would take place. Exceptions are relatives, at a range, at a competition, public performance by an organized group, or in the presence of the owner (can't leave borrower alone with your gun). And immediate danger exception, like a mountain lion is following us and we hunker down in the car, but take my gun because you need to go outside and walk further to get cell reception because I am unable to do so.  When I was in Vegas last month, a mountain lion was caught on Mark Twain Blvd, which is a residential high traffic area.

Then when you want to take possession back of the gun, you must then both go to the FFL again and they will run a NICS on you.

IDK about "leaving with a person who will secure it", because they are not going to use it. This could still be considered a "transfer".  There is no law for your secondary residence or place of sojourn. So if you leave your gun there secured, then I see no issue. But to articulate you left it with X person might be a different story.  Odds of getting caught are minimal, but no one here does anything illegal.

You also have the option of shipping the firearm/s to yourself at your Vegas hotel.  The package will be waiting on you when you arrive.

You should alert the hotel to let them know to expect it so they know to hold it for you.

If the hotel you at staying at prohibits guns, then ...... never mind!   :geekdanc:

Just wanted to add this to the list of options.  Sounds like you have a less risky alternative available -- assuming CMO didn't talk you out of it!

I wonder if the hotel would allow that.  My luggage I left with the bell hop got x-rayed and they found 10rds of ammo and a spare pistol mag. When I called them to send my bag to my room a few hours later when we checked in, I got called downstairs and had some explaining to do. And the security guard made fun of my 10rd pistol mag.

Would it be legal to ship to your friend and have them put the box in the safe, unopened.

Depends on which hotel.

As I said, clear it with hotel management first.

If he wants to leave it with his friend, I think locking it in a case and keeping the key would suffice.

Thanks again.  My Friend is licensed CCW and stores AMMO for me and other items i have shipped to his residence.  If i leave it there, will have in a "LOCKED" container and would inform him of it's contents.  He doesn't mind.
